EU to use 30% recycled content in plastic bottles by 2030

European Union has directed the use of 30% recycled content in plastic bottles by 2030 - with EU member states agreeing to reach a 90% collection target for plastic bottles by 2029.
The directive mandates the use of at least 25% recycled plastic in PET bottles by 2025, and increase this to 30% by 2030.
The target is aimed at plastic bottles that have a capacity of up to 3 litres, including caps and lids. Plastics bottles for beverages with medicinal purpose is said to be exempted from the new target.
EU is also working to improve the collection rates of plastics waste – with targets of collecting 77% single-use plastic bottles by 2025 and 90% of bottles by 2029. Improvements in collection rates is key to use of recycled plastics in new bottles.
Several brand owners and industry organizations have committed to collect plastics waste and use recycled plastics in their packaging. This includes - Coca-Cola European Partners’ pledge to collect 100% of packaging and use 50% recycled plastic in PET bottles in Western Europe by 2025. The other cola giant - PepsiCo already uses 13% recycled plastics in its bottles and now plans to use 50% recycled plastic in its bottles across the European Union by 2030 - with an interim target of 45% by 2025.
Last year, the European Federation of Bottled Waters set a target of using an average of at least 25% rPET in plastic bottles and collect 90% of all PET bottles by 2025. The organization represents around 600 natural mineral and spring water producers.

Italy’s Parmalat uses 50% Recycled Plastics in its New Milk Bottles
Posted on : 10 Apr, 2019
As more and more European companies are committing themselves to circular economy system, Parmalat - Italy’s leading dairy and food manufacturer - has pledged to use 50% recycled plastic in its new milk bottles.
The company is expected to use 50% recycled plastics in all its blue bottles that package its brands - Parmalat Puroblu and Parmalat Zymil.
The initiative will use a 'bottle to bottle' process that will see used bottles converted into new recycled ones, saving the firm about 600 tonnes of new plastic annually.
As per a Life Cycle Assessment Analysis by the University of Parma, the new recycled bottles can help the company save about 18,000 cubic meters of water per year as well as decrease CO2 emissions by almost 1,700 tonnes.
With this initiative, Parmalat aims to address the issue of plastic waste and moving towards its goal of halving the quantity of new plastic used for its bottles.
Recycled plastics used in food containers will be discussed at CMT’s Recycled Plastics in Food Contact Materials on 18-19 Sep, 2019 in Brussels.
