"Driving agri sector ahead - from farm to value-added products"

Agriculture - the engine of growth in Africa! From Cote d’voire to Tanzania, agriculture is propelling strong economic growth. Investments are pouring into Africa from farmland investment to agro-processing value chain.  However, where are the hotspots for agri investment and what are the challenges in these countries? How to develop a responsible and sustainable agriculture model? What are the prospects & challenges to develop the agro-processing value chain? How will these investments benefit small-holder farms and the community?

Zambia has one of the most favourable climate in Africa, richly blessed with abundant arable land and 60% of SADC’s fresh water resources.  The Zambian government has prioritized agriculture and agro processing with tax incentives up to 5 years to attract more investment into the agriculture & processing sector.

Zambia is set  to benefit from a new agro investment worth an estimated $10 million. The German Amatheon Agri Group and the Japanese Toyota Tsusho Corporation recently announced the agro partnership project. The joint venture underscores the increasing importance of the agricultural sector across the continent as a whole. The project includes the construction of a large scale agro-project of 2 700 hectares of land for the cropping of maize, wheat and soya.

Bayer and AGCO, in collaboration with other partners have launched a Future Farm project in Lusaka, Zambia. The project will see the two agricultural players bringing their respective expertise together to develop a sustainable food production system to increase farm output by using Africa’s agricultural resources more effectively.

Securing finances/funding for projects is always a challenge in Africa.  Does size and location matter? What are the projects selection criteria & priority? Is integrated projects more attractive?
