OriginOil Delivers Single-Step Extraction™ System to MBD

Further to our previous blog on OriginOil and MBD Energy (see below), OriginOil announced on 2 Sep that it is ready to ship a Single-Step Extraction™ System to MBD, the second delivery in its multi-phase commercialization agreement.
“We look forward to now using the equipment we’ve purchased from OriginOil to finalize preparations for our 1 hectare Bio CCS algal synthesizer test facility we’re about to construct at Tarong Power Station in Queensland. If performance tests go to plan we expect to later expand the 1 hectare synthesizer to 80 hectares at which point we hope to produce approximately 10,000 tonnes of oil per year.” said Andrew Lawson, Managing Director at MBD Energy Ltd.
Once it achieves success in the first test phase, MBD will purchase significantly larger systems to serve its power station projects in Australia, beginning with the 1 hectare algal synthesizer test plant at Tarong Power Station in South Eastern Queensland, and potentially expanding to full production at all three of MBD’s power station project sites in Australia.

Algae biofuel technology developer OriginOil makes first sale to Carbon Capture and Recycling (CCR) solution Provider, MBD Energy Ltd.

Recently, OriginOil notified MBD Energy that it is ready to ship a Quantum Fracturing System, designed to maximize algae CO2 absorption with minimal energy, to MBD Energy’s research and development facility at James Cook University in Queensland, Australia. The company’s Single-Step Extraction™ System, designed to efficiently separate algae oil from its biomass, will be the next deliverable and will trigger another payment under the purchase order.
In May, the parties agreed on a multi-phase commercialization program under which OriginOil will supply MBD Energy with its algae-to-oil technology platform in progressively larger installations. Subject to the success of the initial test phase, MBD will purchase significantly larger systems to serve its power station projects in Australia, beginning with a one-hectare pilot plant at Tarong Power Station in South Eastern Queensland, and expanding to full production sites at all three of MBD’s power station projects in Australia.
According to MBD Energy, each of its power station projects has the potential to grow to 80-hectare commercial plants, each capable of producing 11 million liters of oil for plastics and transport fuel, and 25,000 tonnes of drought-proof animal feed annually. MBD Energy estimates that the projects will eventually consume more than half of each power station’s flue-gas emissions.

OriginOil thinks that the big driver for algae today is carbon storage. Big energy, mining and industrial groups must reduce their CO2 emission and algae can hlep them do this at very low expense. Algae costs millions not billions, and that is very attractive right now. CO2 generators’ involvement seems to be the most feasible way of building massive algae developments!

Boeing and Chinese Academy of Science to Expand Collaboration on Algae-Based Aviation Biofuels

Boeing Research & Technology and the Chinese Academy of Science’s Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology (QIBEBT) have agreed to expand their collaboration to include other research institutions and aviation supply chain entities as part of their efforts on algae-based aviation biofuel development.
Boeing and QIBEBT previously announced the establishment of a joint research and development laboratory focused on algal growth, harvesting and processing technologies. The Joint Laboratory for Sustainable Aviation Biofuels will be located in Qingdao and managed by Boeing Research & Technology-China and QIBEBT, which will work together to place a strong emphasis on commercial applications for developed technologies.
The 3rd Algae World Asia has invited Prof Dr Jian Xu, Director of Bioenergy Genome Centre - QIBEBT to be one of the panellists to present on the algae technology developments in Asia Pacific. Prof Dr Jian Xu will share QIBEBT's algae feedstock development technologies, at the 3rd Algae World Asia in Singapore on 19-20 October 2010.
Aurora Biofuels shares on pathway to large scale algal biofuel production at 3rd Algae World Asia in Singapore

Aurora Biofuels said it has secured an additional $15 million in a recent funding round led by Oak Investment Partners, with the continued support of Gabriel Venture Partners and Noventi Ventures. This third-round financing brings the startup’s total fundraising to $40 million. The new funding will be used to support the continued path to commercialization for its advanced algae biofuel technology.
In August 2009, Aurora Biofuels announced that they had successfully optimized its base algae strains to more than double CO2 consumption and fuel production, and has proven these results in an outdoor open system.
The company has also been working with Florida Tech on a research project which focuses on developing biofuel with co-products to enhance animal feed as a means to improve the economics of the fuel-production process.
The continued funding from investors shows positive signs that Aurora’s technologies are viable and that they are heading on the right track towards commercialization.

U.S. DOE awards 3 research groups $24 million in Recovery Act funds for algae commercialization studies

In its push for clean energy sources, President Obama's administration is exploring all options -- including algae-based biofuels. Obama and Energy Secretary Steven Chu have set aside $800 million in Recovery Act funds to research new biofuels.
DOE says algae has potential, but technical and economic challenges remain. To guide future work, it released the National Algal Biofuels Technology Roadmap. The U.S. Department of Energy announced on June 17, 2010 that it's awarding up to $24 million for three research groups (Sustainable Algal Biofuels Consortium, Consortium for Algal Biofuels Commercialization, and Cellana, LLC Consortium) to figure out how to make such biofuels commercially viable. In a follow-up to the 1st Algae World Survey report that was published in 2008, the Algae World 2010 Industry Survey is yet another collaboration with Mark R. Edwards, PhD. Professor at Arizona State University. Dr. Edwards conceptualised the idea of the survey because he realized the need to measure where the industry stands and what needs to be done to move forward as an industry towards commercialization.
