CMT's JatrophaWorld is the single largest gathering of international Jatropha practitioners with the common goal of building a sustainable biofuel industry. In 2008, JatrophaWorld has encircled the world with events in Asia, the Americas and Europe, and attracted 1500 delegates from 80 countries.

The JatrophaWorld 2009 series will kick off in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with authoritative panel from across the globe, offering first hand insights and experience of planting thousands hectare in Brazil, India, China, Myanmar, Thailand, Philippines and other Asian countries. Practitioners from major cultivating countries will share on-the-field experience pertaining to Land Clearing, Pollination, Pruning, Fertilisation, Irrigation, Pest & Disease Management, Intercropping and other best practices to ensure optimum productivity and yield of the plants. Other issues that will be discussed at the conference include: Post Harvest Processing, Utilisation Technology of Seedcake, Storage & Logistic, and Financing Options and Challenges.

JatrophaWorld Asia 2009 also considers the competitiveness of jatropha amidst current economic downturn, financial uncertainty and credit crunch. How worried should jatropha developers be about the tightening financial market? Does it mean postponement of expansion plan or does higher risks loom?

With the falling crude oil prices, the viability of biodiesel projects comes under scrutiny. However, Filipino Science Secretary Estrella Alabastro expressed her optimism:

"I don't believe crude-oil price drop will slacken efforts. We realize that oil pricing is very volatile. It may be down today and up tomorrow," she said, adding that oil supply is finite, so the country will have to think toward the longer-term goal lessening dependence on oil imports. Industry News

According to Mr. Eduardo Bundyra, 2009 is a good year to start a Jatropha Project.

Sharing his thoughts at Episode 2 of the Jatropha Interview Series, Mr. Eduardo Bundyra, a panelist at the Practitioners and Production Model Roundtable at Jatropha World Asia 2009 shared his optimism for the Jatropha sector.

He said, “A lot of the unknowns about Jatropha have been tackled, and we have a much better understanding of the ‘real’ raw material and labor requirements,  as well as how to tackle some of the risks.

Mr Eduardo BundyraMr. Bundyra is CEO of Brazil’s Biotins Energia, one of the leading players in Brazil’s Jatropha sector, working closely with Saudi Bras, and the Brazilian Association of Jatropha Producers (ABPPM) to develop of the Jatropha sector in Brazil and expand their Jatropha cultivation to 12,000 Ha in the next two to three years.

As someone with a vested interest in the growth of the Jatropha sector, Mr. Bundyra was in an excellent position to discuss the future direction of the industry from a more holistic perspective, looking at issues from the eyes of a project developer and an investor.

Don’t loose sight of the bigger picture. Tune in to listen to Mr. Bundyra’s insights on:

- Why Brazil? Emerging Role of Brazil in Jatropha sector.
- Will Jatropha overtake Sugarcane as main Biofuel Crop in Brazil?
- Finding a balance between Profit and Sustainable Jatropha cultivation.
- Small-scale vs. Large-scale cultivation- developing an ideal business model.
- Assessing risk for new Jatropha projects.

In Episode 2 of the Jatropha interview Series, Mr. Eduardo Bundyra, CEO of Biotins Energia made the bold proclamation that 2009 was a good year to go into Jatropha.

And he’s not alone in saying this.

Dr. Charles FishelDr. Charles Fishel, CEO of Abundant Biofuels Corporation, one of the most entrenched and experienced Jatropha players in the sector seconded this view.

During Episode 3 of the Jatropha Interview Series, Dr. Fishel, over the phone from California, offered his message of hope for the Jatropha sector, “We should push forward as hard as we can right now! Now is a good time to invest in Jatropha!

Warming to the subject, Dr. Fishel went on to add, “Its going to take one to two years for the Jatropha to be productive, and your project will mature at about the same time economists predict the economy will start to recovery. And that could make a really exciting investment for one thinking about an IPO, an acquisition or a merger with one of the major oil companies or other interested green companies.

Dr. Fishel also emphasized the need to practice sustainable Jatropha cultivation, and avoid ‘land grabbing’ and exploitation to grow jatropha, in compliance with the twelve standards lay out by the sustainable biofuels alliance.

What does it mean to be pro-poor in the context of developing jatropha? A term constantly bandied around, it is fast becoming the catch cry of the sector which is implementing planting projects in some of the poorest regions in the world.

This question was explored by Dr. Suhas P Wani, Principal Scientist at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) during the JatrophaWorld Hamburg summit last year in October.

Dr. Wani’s clear-cut analysis of concepts like “pro-poor” and “smart biofuels” gave him an excellent rating from participants at JatrophaWorld Hamburg 2008.

Dr. Wani proposed an “Integrated Genetics Natural Resources Approach”- a holistic livelihood approach where he called on Jatropha project developers to do develop a program that “embraces sustainable agriculture, knowledge sharing with out growers, and addresses issues of social inclusion, equity and gender at the grassroots”.

In his presentation, Dr. Wani complimented Jatropha as a 'smart biofuel crop' which had the ability to rehabilitate degraded land, but called on project developers ensure that  Jatropha projects do not threaten food security on the ground.

He also touched on other key issues including:

- Suitable agronomic practices

- Development of improved cultivars

- Water requirement

- Institutional arrangements for increased productivity

Find out more about how you can pay it forward with your Jatropha project with sustainable agricultural practices, and by involving local communities.
