The USDA estimates that Fischer- Tropsch diesel using biomass as the feedstock (Biomass-to-Liquids , or BTL) may replace up to 13% of Germany’s current diesel use.

The EU Commission has set the goal of supplying one-third of transport fuel as biofuel in 2020.

Up till now, biodiesel is the most popular biofuel in Europe . However, with recent changes in tax laws and strong government support, the door is now opened to various other biofuels.

Prospects for BTL fuels is high. The newly released EU biomass action plan highlights the importance of 2nd generation biofuels - with BTL fuels seeing the most attention over the next years.

Many international players are looking into BTL with the first industrial scale plant by Choren due online this year and plans for commercialisation in 2008. What is the status of this plant ? How are the other demonstration projects in Europe performing ?

Development of BTL is not limited to Europe only. Elsewhere, the US has become a real hot spot for BTL technology using fuel from woodchips and straw. The Japanese have also successfully produced FT diesel from wood.

BTL still faces economic barriers from logistics, transportation and the combined process of energy conversion with FT synthesis makes it extremely energy intensive.

Meet feedstock producers from Asia and globally. Aimed at commercial & technology managers, CMT’s BTLtec conference is designed to discuss critical issues in the industry
• Overcoming BTL economic barriers
• Initial Biomass Treatment
• BTL Initiatives by major players
• Gasification for small to large scale biomass plants
• View from automakers on BTL fuels
• Developing a sustainable supply chain for transporting Biomass feedstock
And much more
