Mexico leads LATAM in PET Recycling

Posted on : 03 Sep, 2018

Mexico is now the leading country in Latin America in PET collection and recycling with 56.3 percent of PET containers in the country being recovered and recycled.

Much of this achievement is because of PetStar that has enabled Mexico to recycle its PET waste in the past decade. In fact the company has increased PET bottle recycling volume by 150 percent in five years.

Based in Mexico City, PetStar now has an annual production of 50,000 metric tons (110 million pounds) of recycled-content resin (rPET), according to a recent media report. The report further mentions that, this year, PetStar is likely to produce 30,000 metric tons of additional resin compared to 2013, which represents a huge 150 percent increase.

Already the PET recycler recycles almost 70 percent of the PET bottles annually brought to market by its shareholder beverage and bottling companies: Arca Continental, Coca-Cola de Mexico, Bepensa Bebidas, Corporacion del Fuerte, Corporacion Rica, Grupo Bottler Nayar and Embotelladora de Colima.

These statistics clearly indicates that PetStar is working towards achieving its goal of recovering and recycling all PET bottles in Mexico by 2020 and therefore achieve zero waste.

Mexico is one of the major consumers of bottled water and carbonated beverages in the world, that generates high amounts of PET container waste. Recycling these post-consumer PET containers can help Mexico close the circular economy loop.

More about rPET market in Mexico will be discussed at 16th LAPET Latin America PET Packaging, Applications & Recycling Summit on 15-16 October, 2018 in Mexico City.
