With UNESDA, EFBW and other European organizations striving to improve recyclability in PET bottles design, the demand for Recycled PET (r-PET) use is anticipated to increase. Already facing a tight supply for r-pet feedstock in the EU region, how will PET producers cope with the crunch? What is the market outlook expected for the European r-PET market, as well as in the region?
These plus other concerns on the r-PET & Bio-PET markets, as well as direction of sustainability trends will be what leading brand owners, converters, technology providers & preform producers will address at the 12th CEEPET & Balkans Markets conference on 30-31 May 2011 in Krakow, Poland. Last month, Societe de Vin Internationale LTEE debut what it claims is the “first 1-L PET wine bottle for the North American airline industry” on board Air Transat flights. At just 54-g, the PET stock bottle is one-eighth the weight of the previous 430-g glass container. Air Transat, one of Canada’s largest charter airlines, adopted the use of the lightweight 1-L PET wine bottle due to its sustainability advantages in reducing weight on the aircraft and consequently reduce fuel costs.
Developed by Amcor Rigid Plastics, the 1-L bottle is also a first in this format for the company which previously produced smaller 187-ml and 750-ml PET containers. The container makes uses of the silicon oxide (SiOx) barrier coating technology developed by Germany’s KHS Plasmax GmbH.
As quoted by Amcor sales manager Kerry Drewry, “This is an important development because it expands the market potential for barrier PET wine containers. We expect continued growth for barrier PET bottles in a range of sizes for wine.”
Much more about this innovation in PET bottle packaging trends will be revealed at 12th CEEPET & Balkans Markets when Mr. Andreas Klages, International Sales executive with KHS Plasmax GmbH present his topic on`Silicon Oxide Barrier Coating technology for Oxygen-Sensitive Products in PET’.

Coca-Cola’s recyclable PlantBottle PET plastic bottles are an innovative and ground-breaking step in the food and beverage industry. Up to 30 percent of the PlantBottle materials are derived from plants, and the company’s goal is to eventually roll out bottles that are made 100 percent from renewable raw materials, and still fully recyclable.
