Decarbonising the cement industry in Africa!

Cement industry is one of the biggest CO2 emitters in the world,  accounting for about 7%-8% of global CO2 emissions. Cement makers in Sub-Sahara Africa have committed to decarbonization and low carbon cement production by embracing alternative fuels to power their cement  plants and modernizing clinker lines to reduce energy consumption. In line with the Global Cement and Concrete Association's 2050 Net Zero Roadmap, producers including Heidelberg Cement, Holcim (formerly LafargeHolcim), CIMAF, WACEM, BUA and Limak in West Africa are working to green their cement manufacturing processes.

In Senegal, IFC and Sococim Partner in Landmark Deal to Boost Low-Carbon Cement Production in the country. Majority of the funds raised, will be earmarked to facilitate Sococim's efforts to decarbonize its cement production process. The process will employ up to 70% alternative fuels, increasing efficiency and lowering greenhouse gas emissions by up to 312,000 tons equivalent per year, allowing the company to create cement with one of the lowest emission rates in the world.

Cement manufacturers aim to cut clinker imports and cement prices while also reducing CO2 emissions by using local raw materials and lowering the clinker factor. CBI Ghana is undertaking the construction of a new Calcined Clay Cement Plant with a capacity of 405,000-ton per annum in Ghana. FLSmidth is providing new technology that would make it possible to substitute clinker with calcined clay.  While Ghana's project is the largest, other LC3 projects are being constructed in Africa. Malawi's LC3 project, a public-private partnership venture, is also ongoing, according to cement journal CemNet. Lafarge, Shayona Cement, and Cement Products Ltd will be among the participants. Cimpor Global Holdings has a calcined clay project in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, with Oyak, and Cemex has begun activated clay production at its kiln at the Assiut Cement facility in Egypt, according to CemNet. Calcined clay cement production is expected to transform the industry, and the introduction of AI to optimise products could result in further clinker factor reductions.

Over the next few years, demand for green cement in Africa will increase due to growing trends in sustainability and energy efficiency for both buildings and infrastructures.
