“PET players adapting to market challenges with new innovations”

“Optimising packaging structures in sync with the Circular Economy”

PET & feedstock prices have been on the upward trend driven by shortage in supply.  Paraxylene is now fetching Euro 817 tonne, a increase of Euro 57, as one manufacturer in France recently declared force majeure.

Generally towards the summer period, demand for PET will increase further fueled by higher demand for bottled water and beverages. Bottlers will need to replenish their stock levels. Sources in the market have commented that PET is currently in short supply and expensive

With the rise of virgin PET prices, the gap between rPET and VPET will become smaller at not too long – bringing fresh hopes for PET recycling business.

However , quality issues, relating to bales still remain a major area of difficulty and the high price of clean washed flake in relation to virgin PET resin creates financial problems with economics of upgrading the former to Food Grade RPET pellets.

The EU circular economy model is becoming more of a reality and it is the brandowners and retailers that are driving this.

How are the PET producers transitioning towards the circular economy ?  There needs to be flexibility, innovation, communication and collaboration to build a truly sustainable packaging supply chain.

How are PET converters, sheets producers  and thermoform tray producers adapting to this change ?

How will renewable resources perform given that crude oil prices are still low ?

Topical issues like these and more will be highlighted at CMT’s 18th Greater Europe PET (GEPET) which will be held this year in Barcelona Spain on the 27-28th of April.

at 2254 Restaurant Barcelona

18:00 - 22:30 hrs.

Just 5 minutes walk from the hotel is this gem Restaurant 2254 which pays homage to the Mediterranean coastline with Italian, French and Spanish cuisines.

2254 refers to the number of kilometres that separate Palermo from Barcelona by road and this is where the head chef Chef Nuncio Cona originated from.

The restaurant is full of allegories to the memory of its founders, both Chef's Nuncio Cona and General Manager (and wife) Irina. True values and life experiences are bedecked in every corner of this eating house. There is an indoor urban garden that covers the top part of a wall and the restaurant is serenaded with touching art works done by hand.

Industry News

LINPAC – a leading fresh food packaging manufacturer – has launched a range of rigid rPET solutions for the food service industry.

The new range offers the food service industry a choice of hinged-lid and film lidded rigid rPET packs that can be used to package prepared fresh food such as sandwiches, salads, sushi and bakery items.

Distributors as well as customers in the hotel, restaurant  and catering industries can benefit from this new range. With the ability to both hand or machine packed at its on-sale location, the new rigid rPET range offers flexibility, functionality, sustainability and ease of use.

The new addition also complements LINPAC’s current portfolio of EPS Hotpacs, catering trays, plates and bowls.

LNPAC claims that each lightweight, crystal-clear solution is manufactured using high levels of post-consumer recyclate, which has been super-cleaned in-house by LINPAC to ensure compliance with all food safety regulations.

LINPAC is committed to closed-loop recycling process and allows food service customers to contribute to a circular economy by utilising sustainable fresh food packaging solutions.

Gerresheimer, a provider of specialty products made of plastics and glass for the pharmaceuticals and life science industries, has expanded its pharmaceutical bottle production base at its Zaragoza plant in Spain.

A new 600m2 ISO class 8 clean room equipped with nine high performance injection and injection stretch moulding machines is added to the Spain plant. Further, the clean room has space for another six machines allowing Gerresheimer to expand the facility at a later stage to 15 moulding machine capacity.

The new expansion will enable production of high quality PET pharma bottles. In addition, the plant is also now capable of fitting different types of closure, from simple caps to tamper evident or child-safe closures on the bottles.

Among its range of bottles, the new unit is expected to manufacture PET bottles suitable for medicines and nutritional food supplements.

The Zaragoza facility was acquired by Gerresheimer in 2008. Apart from its Zaragoza plant, Gerresheimer also has a plant in Masalavés, Spain. Besides, it owns over 40 production plants in Europe, North and South America and Asia.

Some of its other products include – Insulin pens, inhalers, pre-fillable syringes, other vials, ampoules and bottles for liquid and solid pharmaceuticals. It also serves the moulds cosmetics industry packaging.

More about PET packaging for the European market will be discussed at CMT’s 18th GEPET on 27-28 April, 2017 in Barcelona.

The plastics industry is committed to reduce waste, minimize plastics' impact on the environment and maintain the target of zero plastics to landfill by 2025. To ensure that plastic waste does not languish in the environment, two PET tech majors – Next Generation Recyclingmaschinen (NGR) and KUHNE are coming together to build systems for producing PET sheets from PET waste. They are aiming to achieve the same quality of PET sheets that are made from virgin raw materials.

NGR and KUHNE aim to raise the quality level of for direct production of high-quality, food-grade PET sheets that are produced using skeleton scrap, sheet production scrap or PET bottle flakes.

A shredder-feeder-extruder combination will produce plastic melt while the P:REACT unit will improve the quality of PET and lastly KUHNE’s sheet system will ensure that PET sheets produced have the tightest tolerances.

The integrated system is likely to be beneficial for both PET sheet producers and thermoformed part manufacturers.

The shredder-feeder-extruder combination has the capability to convert any form of feedstock into high-quality melt. This allows PET scrap such as punch scrap, sheet production scrap, bottle flakes or even fibers to be used too. The second system - P:REACT decontaminates the PET melt to ensure it is 100% food-contact compliant – in accordance with FDA regulations and the IV value is set to the desired level.

The system’s ability to produce high-quality PET sheets from low-cost raw materials and also eliminate one melt step in the process is the technology’s USP.

European plastics calls for Circular Economy accord

European consumers including those in Spain are increasingly preferring PET and rPET packaging given its versatility, lightweight, barrier, food safe properties, as well as recyclability. To tap these growing demand, Europe’s major packager – LINPAC is expanding into Spain with a three-year plan and estimated investment of €14.3 million.

As part of this plan, LINPAC is investing in excess of €8m in a new extrusion and thermoforming capacity in Pravia, Spain. The new facility is expected to offer a wide range of lighter, more cost-effective and sustainable PET and rPET products.

This is LINPAC’s fourth extrusion line in Pravia. The new line will enable LINPAC to increase its capacity by 25 percent with increase in annual production to 630 million trays – an increase of 80 million.

LINPAC further plans to invest €3.8m for 2017 and a further €2.5m in 2018, as part of the 3 year plan.

The new project is expected to boost LINPAC’s position in the Iberian region as well as in greater Europe delivering reliable, high quality, rigid and flexible packaging solutions to leading retailers, packers and distributors.
