According to ABIHPEC, the Brazilian personal care industry has seen sales grow from $2.4m 16 years ago to $14.2m last year. Overall, the growth in the personal care sector was much more vigorous than in other areas of the economy with 10% average annual growth compared to a GDP of 3.1% and annual growth of 2.5% for the industry in genereal.

With the emergence of the middle class, increased consumer spending and needs are also driving the growth of household and personal care products in Brazil and rest of South American countries. Not to forget consumers are also focusing on value!

Walmart, the major retailer who leads in sustainability initiatives has also implemented their end- to- end project in Brazil. Has this exercise created more sustainable products? What will be the impact to wal-mart's suppliers?

Frost & Sullivan forecasts that Brazil’s personal care markets will reach $1.62bn by 2018, with personal care chemicals having topped the $1bn mark in 2011. The fast-growing Brazilian middle class population has helped to drive this growth. As new demographic and socio-economic patterns start to prevail, this momentum can be maintained, says a Frost & Sullivan report.

It is indicated that the growth of the aged population would triple by 2020, and propel personal care products would need to be targeted to cater to this demographic, with anti-aging ingredients likely to be popular.

Demand for natural-based personal care products in Brazil would stimulate the demand for natural and green ingredients. Frost & Sullivan industry analyst, Lisse de Oliveira said, “The search for environment-friendly products and green chemical ingredients has driven the use of organic raw materials; commonly extracted from seeds, fruits and roots.” She also added that personal care chemicals companies should work on offering high-quality products at competitive prices. This would help to counter factors such as volatile prices and the availability of raw materials of varying quality which make up the ‘informal market’.

Hear more from Frost & Sullivan’s Senior Analyst, Ms. Lisse Oliveira at 2nd South America Surfactants HPC Markets in Sao Paulo in her presentation entitled “Market Outlook for Surfactants in Brazil”.
