"Will Propylene Continue
To Be Short?"

"Dealing With Higher
Inter-MaterialCompetition!"

According to Townsend Polymers, the consumption of Polypropylene in Central/Eastern Europe bounced back with an amazing growth of 21.5% last year, on account of higher domestic and export demand for plastic products, following a decline of -7.1% 2 years ago. Strong GDP growth averaging 4.1%/year is projected for the next five years. This growth ise supported by ongoing industrialization and infrastructure development as well as strong demand growth in consumer products and Russia's huge investments in new oriented PP film lines.

"The massive Russian conglomerate Sibur Holding JSC is progressing with construction of a previously announced $2 billion petrochemical complex in Siberia that by early 2013 will triple its polypropylene homopolymer production capacity, with much of that output targeted for export to China... Sibur is planning another PP plant - this one with 441 million pounds for copolymers - in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, that is due to come on stream in 2014 or 2015"
2/6/2011, Plastics news

In terms of capacity, several new PP plants have been brought on-stream in this region over the past few years and six new plants are currently being planned for the region and are scheduled to come on-stream in the coming 4 years. New plants are planned for Russia, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. With these capacity additions, how will it impact on trade patterns in the region?

The emergence of shale gas in the US has changed the feedstock dynamics, reducing propylene production in crackers by more than 50%. It also has tightened supplies of crude-C4s and butadiene in the US. With light feedstocks expected to dominate cracking economics in the US for the foreseeable future, butadiene, propylene, and polypropylene consumers could be faced with high-priced material and product shortage. How can PP producers secure competitive feedstock in the future?

CMT's 6th Global PP Markets & Tech Conference brings together a dynamic leading panel of experts to address pertinent issues in the PP industry.

As reported on 27 Oct 2011, GS Caltex has completed a PP compounding plant in China, as Korea’s second-largest oil refiner continues to expand its overseas business portfolio. The plant located in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, has started commercial operations with an annual output of 37,000 tons, according to the company. PP compounds will be used in cars and home appliances. China currently sees growing demand for PP compounds which is estimated at 1.2 million tons per year. GS Caltex is planning to provide PP compounds from its Suzhou production facility to Russia and Asian countries such as Thailand and Taiwan. GS Caltex said that it aims to take up a combined 7 percent share of the fast-growing Chinese market for PP compounds. The company is scheduled to complete another PP compounding factory in the Czech Republic by September 2012. The unit will be the first venture among Korean players in the central European country.

Demand for PP compounds is booming in China on account of China being one of the large growing markets for automotive industry including endurance and high impact applications such as dashboards, door panels and bumpers, glass fibre reinforced PP for under the bonnet applications.
