Bioplastics - Poised for next level of Growth - with New Applications & Innovations!

The road ahead for the Bioplastics sector looks set to be an exciting one!

Global demand for bioplastics continues to grow by leaps and bounds, as new applications and innovations catch the interest of "green" conscious end-users. Asia is not far behind.

Pira International reported that Global demand for bioplastic packaging is forecast to reach 884,000 tons by 2020. This translates to a compound annual growth rate of 24.9% from 2010-15 slowing to a CAGR of 18.3% in the five years to 2020. According to the study, a new breed of bioplastics will be major drivers as packaging market demand gradually shifts from biodegradable and compostable polymers towards biopackaging based on renewable and sustainable materials.

Recently implemented regulations are also compelling companies to reduce their carbon footprint, making bioplastics a logical choice.

But in order to realise the investment opportunities in emerging bioplastics markets in Asia, it is essential for producers to first address concerns regarding supply capacities and sustainability.

At 5th Bioplastics Markets you will hear the most authoritativeand in-depth analysis of these crucial issues and more.

Against a global green agenda, bioplastics continues to rein supreme. Bioplastics accounts for less than 2% of the petrochemical-based polymer consumption, but this market has been rapidly developing over the past few years.

With the increasing use of plant-based sources for bioplastics, comes the hot issue of sustainability. Corn and sugarcane used to produce bioplastics are primarily for consumption and this could be threatened by the growth of bioplastics. More and more bioplastics producers are looking at alternatives such as cellulosics and non-food wastes like potato-skin. One recent example is the development of bioplastics made of plant stems and cashew nut shells by NEC.

"Packaging is one of the most advanced fields of applications for bioplastics, both in biobased and biodegradable plastics" [1 October 2010, packagingnews.co.uk] Flexible films form the biggest part of the bioplastics market and we see increasing demand for such films in every country. Many packaging producers and brand owners are collaborating in a bid to inject as much "green-ness" in their products as possible.

As the bioplastics industry progresses, we see increasing use of biobased materials in durable goods in the electronics and automotive sectors. Bio-polyurethanes would soon be used in cars and running shoes and Fujitsu just created a bioplastic mouse made from non-food source. These are just a few of the many emerging bioplastics applications in durable products these days. What new research & developments are brand owners and producers coming up with to increase the percentage of bioplastics in their products?

How is the bioplastic industry developing in some of the Asian countries? What are the challenges faced in the India, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong and what are some of their government regulations/legislations in place to support the bioplastics movement? What are the latest updates on compostability testing and what are the lessons learnt that can be put into use?

US-based PolyOne says its reSound biopolymer, made with 30% bio-derived content, is ideal for durable applications.

The company says its customers often struggled to find biopolymers with the desired performance properties.

“Our reSound compounds solve this dilemma by providing both a high percentage of renewable content and excellent mechanical properties,” says the firm. “With reSound biopolymer compounds, tomorrow’s cars, mobile phones can stand out from the competition.”

The consumer landscape is changing and it’s having a serious impact on the packaging decisions of many major companies, especially in Europe. Among the companies considering a switch from traditionally developed packaging to bioplastics, is Nestle, who announced their intentions to swap out their current plastic packaging at a February conference in Las Vegas.

Nestle is currently in the process of further investigating bioplastics. From 2015 on, Nestlé will be looking to implement the use of conventional or new bioplastics adapted to packaging applications that are derived from non-food sources such as wood, agricultural waste, drought-resistant plants and algae.

Italy has put a ban on plastic bags and individual companies across Europe are working for greater sustainability at a rate currently unrivaled by other parts of the world. Major American corporations have also been peppering their product lines with new, more sustainable packaging, a trend that is likely to continue in coming years.

Following the global trend, China’s biodegradable plastics industry has developed rapidly. The biodegradable plastics capacity reached 80,000 tons in 2007, and soared to 150,000 tons in 2009, almost 100% more than that in 2007. However, in 2009, China's domestic consumption of bio-plastics was less than 8,000 tons, and over 95% of China’s bio-plastic materials and products were exported to Europe, America and other developed countries, because people there have a strong awareness of environmental protection and are rich enough to accept expensive biodegradable plastics.
