Surviving the global slowdown while balancing energy efficiency & green concerns

Since the onset of the financial crisis, the silicone industry is seeing slower times compared to last year when prices rose to all time highs amidst high raw material costs and high demand. As the outlook for world economy remains uncertain though on the way to recovery, will raw material prices continue to remain at low levels ?

While China remain a bright spot with continued growth rates or overcapacity a key concern as the industry has seen more new players joining? As the competition heats up, how will China's silicone industry dynamics change in the future? As mature economies like South Korea and Japan take a beating from the current dire economic situation, how will producers in these markets survive the crisis? What lessons can the industry learn?

Amidst the backdrop of slower economic growth, there are renewed concerns over the safety of D5 silicones in Canada. How will the government's efforts to legislate against D5 silicones impact the industry? What are the wider implications of such a possible move?

In addition, the industry faces constant demands to be energy efficient and environmentally friendly, what kind of technology innovations and steps are
being taken to meet these concerns?

Innovation is key to develop the silicone industry to new heights. What is the growth potential for silicone applications in : LED, Personal Care & Construction industry?

Industry News

In May 2008, the Canadian government published a preliminary assessment, which identified decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) silicones as meeting toxicity criteria sufficient to require elimination under Canadian law.

Environment Canada, the organization that conducted the study, found that D5 — a common ingredient in beauty and personal-care products — met its criteria for “persistence, bioaccumulation potential and inherent toxicity to nonhuman organisms.

The landmark proposal sent shockwaves through the global silicone industry, and questions of whether legislators from around the world would follow Canada’s footsteps became a key issue.

The Silicones Environmental, Health & Safety Council (SEHSC) have taken an active role in responding to these findings, conducting additional studies on the environmental impact of D5 silicones and working with Canadian government agencies to ensure that questions related to silicon-based materials are answered accurately.

At the upcoming 3rd Global Silicone Biz Outlook we’ve invited Ms. Lisa M. DuMars, Global Product Stewardship Leader from Momentive Performance Materials, and a key representative of Canada’s SEHSC to share an update on the proposed legislation banning D5 silicones in Canada, and its potential implications on the global silicone sector.

Those keen on finding out more about the proposed D5 silicones ban in Canada, along with other pressing issues in the Silicone industry, are urged to attend 3rd Global Silicone Biz Outlook on 23-24 September 2009 in Shanghai.

Three principles of sustainability - social, economic and environmental - are key to the competitiveness and therefore the survival of a company in the long term.

The direct link between innovation, competitiveness and sustainability lies in the increased return of saving resources. With this in mind, the world’s leading silicone companies continue investing in research and development in order to advance innovative solutions that improve not only products but also the production process itself.

Most recently, Dow Corning announced their new business strategy to deliver solutions that are more efficient, innovative and sustainable, helping customers navigate dynamic economic, social and environmental megatrends.

Sustainability will be a key area of focus at the upcoming 3rd Global Silicone Biz Outlook conference in Shanghai on 23-24 September 2009.

Dow Corning Corporation’s Vice President General Manager Speciality Chemicals Business Unit & Asia Area President, Jean Marc Gilson will share an update on Dow Corning’s Innovations, Sustainability Approach & Efficiency.

Also on the agenda is Dr. Thomas Koini, Vice President (Silicones-Greater China) of global chemical giant, Wacker Chemicals Co. Ltd (China). He has been invited to share on “Managing Innovation- What Industrial R&D Has to Deliver?

In his eagerly anticipated speech, Dr. Koini will touch on balancing innovation with short term, mid term & long term challenges including:

-Declining availability of resources (raw materials and energy),
-Climate change,
-Population growth & demographic changes

He will also share a case study on Silicone Industry R&D at the conference.

There is also a key session by BRB International, on their New Silicone Emulsion Technology.

Bas Bollen, the Business Unit Director for Silicones at BRB International, shares on BRB’s strategy of replacing organic solvents with water; a Cost-Effective and Environmentally friendly solution.
