Semen Indonesia to build cement plant in Papua in 2016

Posted on : 24 Jun, 2015

Indonesia's state-run cement giant Semen Indonesia has signed an MoU with Jayapura municipal government to build a US$150 million plant in Papua.

Expected to produce approximately 1 million tons of cement annually, the plant will not only supply the country's easternmost province but also meet the demand in neighboring Maluku and Papua New Guinea (PNG).

The state-run cement company is currently securing the permits for the facility and plans to commence construction in 2016, with commercial operations planned for 2019.

Data from Indonesia Cement Association indicate that Papua and Maluku clocked the highest nationwide demand growth in 2014 at 6 percent, which is twice the domestic consumption growth in Indonesia. Cement demand in Papua and Maluku is estimated at around 1.2 million tons. The new cement plant will help meet such rising demand from infrastructure projects in the east and help reduce costs of transporting cement from Semen Indonesia's plants in Gresik, East Java, and South Sulawesi.

Approximately 720,000 tons of cement from the new plant's initial annual production is expected to be sold to the Papuan market and about 180,000 tons to be exported.

17th Asia CemenTrade Summit on 20-21 October, 2015 in Bali will lead discussions on the growing cement markets in Asian countries, including Indonesia, Myanmar, Cambodia, The Philippines, China, India, Japan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
