Nigeria’s major cement producer - Dangote Cement Plc has expanded into Asian markets. The company has tied up with China’s Sinoma International Engineering Company Limited to construct a 3-million metric tonnes per annum (mmtpa) cement plant in Nepal.
The cement plant is expected to capture the demand in Nepalese market, especially the reconstruction works in the aftermath of the April 2015 earthquake.
Dangote also plans to enter the Indian market and given Nepal’s geographical proximity to India, it’s strategic location for entering Indian and other Asian market.
The total contract signed between the two companies is worth $4.34 billion which not only includes the cement plant in Nepal but also several cement factories in 10 other African nations.
The new projects are expected to be completed in the next two years and help the cement behemoth reach capacity of over 70 million.
More on Nepal’s cement markets will be discussed at 17th Asia CemenTrade Summit on 20-21 October, 2015 in Bali, Indonesia.

State-run steelmaker Rashtriya Ispat Nigam (RINL) plans to foray into the cement market. The steelmaker aims to start a cement plant with a capacity of 6 million tonne per annum (mtpa) in Vizag, at an approximate cost of Rs. 3,000 crore.
RINL plans a joint venture for the cement plant and is expected to float a global tender inviting expression of interests (EoIs) from the cement industry. RINL will hold a minority stake in the joint venture and plans to award the majority stake to a company that has the required experience and exposure to run a cement plant.
RINL produces by-products such as fly ash and slag from its 2.9 mtpa steel plant. Currently, the company sells as much as 1.2 mtpa of slag produced in the plant to local cement manufactures; while fly ash goes into earth-filling.
With the joint venture, RINL plans to use it directly in the cement plant. In fact the company is also increasing the capacity of the plant to 6.3 mtpa, scheduled to be completed in 2016, which means RINL will produce more slag and fly ash.
The company is confident it will generate enough fly ash and slag to fuel a 6 mtpa cement plant.
As demand for cement grows in Andhra Pradesh where the plant will be located, RINL expects to tap the market.
Major cement makers are already present in the Andhra Pradesh market in India. Realtors had recently said that due to a shortage in the supply of building material and its high price in the state, they are planning to import cement from China.
17th Asia CemenTrade Summit on 20-21 October, 2015 in Bali, will spotlight on the current trends and expansion of cement industry in regional markets.

Indonesia's state-run cement giant Semen Indonesia has signed an MoU with Jayapura municipal government to build a US$150 million plant in Papua.
Expected to produce approximately 1 million tons of cement annually, the plant will not only supply the country's easternmost province but also meet the demand in neighboring Maluku and Papua New Guinea (PNG).
The state-run cement company is currently securing the permits for the facility and plans to commence construction in 2016, with commercial operations planned for 2019.
Data from Indonesia Cement Association indicate that Papua and Maluku clocked the highest nationwide demand growth in 2014 at 6 percent, which is twice the domestic consumption growth in Indonesia. Cement demand in Papua and Maluku is estimated at around 1.2 million tons. The new cement plant will help meet such rising demand from infrastructure projects in the east and help reduce costs of transporting cement from Semen Indonesia's plants in Gresik, East Java, and South Sulawesi.
Approximately 720,000 tons of cement from the new plant's initial annual production is expected to be sold to the Papuan market and about 180,000 tons to be exported.
17th Asia CemenTrade Summit on 20-21 October, 2015 in Bali will lead discussions on the growing cement markets in Asian countries, including Indonesia, Myanmar, Cambodia, The Philippines, China, India, Japan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
