Jamie Fortescue

Jamie Fortescue, British, born 1966, joined the European Starch Industry Association, the AAF, in January 2012 as its managing director. Supported by a team of five staff, his role is to represent the interests of EU starch producers to the EU institutions and other EU stakeholders.
Before joining the AAF, Jamie was the Director General of the European Spirits Organisation, CEPS (2004-2011). Prior to joining CEPS, he was the director for international corporate affairs at the employment agency, Randstad, based in Amsterdam (1997-2004) and an account director at the public affairs consultancy, EPPA, based mainly from their offices in London and Brussels, but also Madrid and Warsaw (1992-1997).
Before becoming involved in EU public affairs, Jamie worked in third world development (at London based Planco Consulting from 1989-91, and as a trainee at DG Development of the European Commission (from 1988-89). Jamie was educated at Eton College and the University of East Anglia, and has a degree in French and Economics

Dr. Milda Embuscado, Senior Principal Scientist at the Materials and Process Technology, McCormick & Co., Inc., Hunt Valley, Maryland, obtained her Ph. D. from Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN and worked as a Research Scientist at the Whistler Center for Carbohydrate Research, a world renowned carbohydrate research institute. Her research areas include starch and polysaccharides, characterization and modification and structure-function relationship. She provided in-house training on starch technology and functionality while at Cerestar USA Inc. which was attended by engineers, plant, management and sales staff. She also conducted similar training at McCormick & Co., Inc. on starch modification and functionality and on flavor encapsulation using starches and gums. She has more than 20 years of experience in ingredient technology particularly on starches, gums and carbohydrates and their applications. She has given invited presentations to the Institute of Food Technologist (IFT) and at the AACC International and has edited and authored books on Functionalizing carbohydrates for food applications: Texturizing and bioactive/flavor delivery systems and on Edible films and coatings for food applications, a best seller book in its category. She also authored several refereed scientific articles on carbohydrates and food bioactives. She was the past chairman of the IFT Carbohydrate and Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods Divisions. She is a Certified Food Scientist (April 1, 2013) awarded by the International Food Science Certification Commission and a member of the inaugural class.

Dr. Willi Witt graduated from the Technical University of Berlin with a Degree in Food Technology. His area of academic specialization was in Flour Milling Technology, Starch Technology, Fermentation Technology, Yeast Technology, Distillery Technology and Biochemistry. He worked over 15 year in the wheat starch factory Kröner-Stärke in Germany as technical manager and director. His thesis was focused on the development of a new water saving wheat starch process and an anaerobic digester system for waste water treatment as well the implementation of these developments into the real process scale. At GEA Westfalia Separator, Germany, he was over 20 years responsible as sales director worldwide for the sales of separators, decanters, process lines and complete processes for the production of starch and proteins out of starch containing plants and for the industrial biotechnology. Nowadays he is as the expert for starch and protein extraction and application, waste water treatment, mechanical and thermal processes member of the Cemsan team. Dr. Witt is Chairman of the German Starch Expert Group, within the Cereal Association in Detmold, Germany, Since 2002.

Mr. Henk Jaap Meijer is the Director of Marketing & Sales at HENAN Food Systems. He graduated in 1988 from State University Groningen in The Netherlands with a degree in Polymer Chemistry. He has worked for AVEBE the Dutch Potato Starch producer during 13 years on development of starch derivatives for food and technical applications. During two years he executed business development for palm- and fish oil based food supplements at Loders Croklaan. At BASF Plant Science he was involved in the development of applications for amylopectin and high-amylose starches from genetically modified potatoes.
From 2007 till 2014 Mr. Meijer worked as Director Marketing & Innovation for Emsland Group where he was responsible for amongst others development and market introduction of the Empure® range clean label starches and dehydrated potatoes. Since July Mr. Meijer is Director Marketing & Sales for HENAN Food Systems. This company develops innovations for processors of starch containing crops and downstream industries.

Casper is the Senior Scientist and Head of Research at the Palo Alto, California based Dupont Industrial BioSciences, Genencor Technology Centre. He attended Wagenigen University in Netherlands where he received his MSc in Molecular Science in 1992. Worked , as part of this Msc, in a biotech co in France and then completed his final year in the University of California . He graduated at the Wagenigen University and did his thesis work at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York. In 1998, he received his PhD and continued his thesis research and later became Assistant Professor at Wagenigen

Casper moved to Genencor International in Leiden, a subsidiary of Dupont in 2004. He began as a Scientist in Bacterial Strain Development to improve production strains used in Genencor's manufacturing plants and then became leader of new detergent enzyme development. In 2005, Casper became the head of the Leiden R&D , which functions as the global centre of excellence for protein engineering and high throughput screening. In 2013 he transferred to Palo Alto and now leads the research team focussing on enzyme discovery and development, protein engineering, bacterial and fungal expression and pathway engineering. Casper has developed a range of products for the fuel ethanol industry and is responsible for the global Biorefinery R & D project portfolio within Dupont, which includes technology development for grain processing, grain and cellulosic ethanol and bio-butanol

Harun Uluyol - Managing Director at Agro by Nature

Mr. Harun Uluyol was born in Germany but returned to Turkey for an education in International Trade and Business Development at Dokuz Eylul University in Izmir. He graduated at Chalmers University of Technology - Sweden with a degree in Environmental Engineering in a project that focussed on biogas production from household waste.

Mr. Uluyol started his professional career at Emsland Nisasta as Sales Engineer and Business Developer for modified (potato-) starches and dehydrated potatoes. He then moved to Thailand where he became Managing Director at Emsland Asia Logistics Co.. In this position he built a network with suppliers of modified tapioca and transferred know-how and technology to local Thai producers. Mr. Uluyol developed the Emsland Group tapioca business and established relationships with producers and agents in South-East Asia, China, Bangladesh and India. His main achievement was realization of a break-even situation within 9 months from start-up.

Mr. Uluyol speaks Turkish, English, Swedish, German and Thai and is Associate Member at the Thai Tapioca Starch Association in Bangkok. Recently he became managing Director at Agro by Nature, a distributor of food ingredients based in Izmir.

Agro by Nature distributes innovations, bridges between customers and principals and creates value for partners. Their staff are seasoned in food with extensive local market knowledge, supported by international teams from amongst others KMC the Danish potato starch manufacturer. Agro by Nauture's policy is to blend deep-seated Turkish traditions with a sense of innovation that is both responsive and perceptive.

Piet Buwalda

Doctor Buwalda studied organic chemistry at the University of Groningen, where he obtained his PhD on a thesis dealing with the synthesis and characterisation of hybrid inorganic-organic compounds. He started working at AVEBE in 1989 in fundamental starch chemistry. Later he moved to the field of developing starches for food applications. He has worked on numerouos products introduced by AVEBE over the years among which the Eliane range of starches and (connected to the lecture) Etenia 457, a novel gelling agent based on starch. From 2011 till 2011 his was heading Food R&D for AVEBE; from 2011 onwards his responsibility is in the total starch application area. Dr. Buwalda is co-author some 25 independent patents and 25 publications

Simon Bentley

Simon has 17 years of experience analysing and understanding commodity markets. As a Director of LMC International, Mr Bentley led a team advising on all aspects of carbohydrate markets with a focus on grains and their derivative products. He has advised multinational agribusinesses, energy and chemical companies on their raw material purchases, processing and operations as well as government bodies focussed on reform of grain related markets.

As a Vice President of Olam International Mr Bentley led the research for a commodity fund focussed on building detailed models of commodity fundamentals as a basis for trading. Whilst his focus is grain, oilseed and sugar markets he has expertise modelling fundamentals of tree crops and has, over the years, established a deep understanding of the interactions between different commodity prices. He is a recognised expert in the fundamentals of cassava markets and how these relate to other carbohydrate crops.

Mr Bentley is a graduate of Trinity College, Oxford University and the London School of Economics. He lives in Singapore.

Mr. Murat Degirmen is the Deputy General Manager of Tecnical at Sunar Misir A.S., corn processing company to starch derivatives, sweeteners and polyols.
He graduated in 1994 from Middle East Tecnical University with a degree in chemical engineer. He got MBA degree from Çukurova University in 1999. He will get this year his Ph.D. degree from the Çukurova University (Turkey) on production management.
He has worked for Amylum Nisasta, The Amylum Group starch and sweeteners producer, for 9 years on production, investments and supply chain departments.
From 2004 till today Mr. Degirmen has been working as Deputy General Manager of Technical at Sunar Misir A.S. and responsible for factory and investments. In recent years, Sunar Misir A.S. invested in various types of starch derivatives, polyols products and launched new products, introduced for the first time in Turkey market.

She graduated in MBA from Sasin Graduate Institute of Business Administration of Chulalongkorn University and in Computer Engineering Degree from Chulalongkorn University in Thailand. In 1991, she worked in Sanguan Wongse Co., Ltd in spare parts and gasoline business. In 1994 she was promoted to be Managing Director of Sanguan Wongse Industries Co., Ltd. In the past 20 years with starch quality mindset, SWI group has expanded market share continuously with 90% market in abroad. Sanguan Wongse Starch Co., Ltd. earned big market share in modified starch market, especially in paper application. In 2008, she developed Tapioca Fiber as functional fiber in food application with Lyckeby Culinar AB. and set up T-Fibre Innovation Co., Ltd. SWI can generate energy from waste water and wet fiber to biogas and electricity. With business concept of 'Being together', SWI group work closely with both upstream and downstream in tapioca starch supply chain.
