Dr. Bernardo Llamas is a Mines Engineer, he obtained his PhD from the Technical University of Madrid (UPM) in 2007. He is currently an Associate Professor in the UPM, Engineering College (ETSI).
Since 2006 he has been involved in several projects related to CO2 reduction emissions from industries, focusing his studies in CO2 bio-fixation with microalgae. He holds one patent in this field: “Procedure to capture flue gases and recycling of CO2 through a biological process (microalgae)”.
He worked for ENDESA until 2009, as Engineer responsible for the design and construction of a microalgae plant. As from November 2009, he is the R&D Head of AlgaEnergy, S.A. He has promoted and is now leading the research programmes that AlgaEnergy has won, including the macro-program CENIT-VIDA, with a total budget of 19 million Euros. Other relevant projects are the European projects: ECLIPSE (its objective is to obtain biomaterial from microalgae biomass) and CO2ALGAEFIX, which will determine the techno-economical aspects of the CO2 biofixation through microalgae, at a demo scale.
Thanks to his work, ALGAENERGY has obtained two new patents concerning to a new photo-bioreactor design (PCT, photobioreactor for culturing photoautotrophic microorganims) and a novel process to valorize the biomass in a cascade approach (PCT, bio-refinery concept).
Bernardo has published two books: “Capture and Storage of CO2”, prized as the best 2010 University book, and “Technologies to fight climate change”. He is also the author of a number of publications and has participated in several international congresses as speaker.
