Bill Barclay, Ph.D. is Chief Intellectual Property Officer at Martek Biosciences Corporation, a DSM Company. In this position, Bill works in support of both Martek’s intellectual property and innovation teams. Bill is responsible for developing and using IP-based information to help drive innovation within Martek and to improve the Company’s overall strategic perspective. He also works to foster innovation in Martek and is an active inventor on several new projects within the Company.
Prior to joining Martek, Bill founded OmegaTech Inc. (Boulder, Colorado) and held offices as the President and Vice President of Research and Development, as well as Chief Scientific Officer. At OmegaTech, Bill led development of a successful heterotrophic microalgal technology for the production of lipids rich in docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). This technology represents the most productive microbially-based lipid production technology developed to date. Bill has spent over 30 years in microalgal biotechnology research. This includes work in algal technologies for nutraceutical production at Martek and OmegaTech, research in algal biofuels at the Solar Energy Research Institute in Golden, Colorado, and working as a consultant to the United Nations Development Program in China.
Bill Barclay is an inventor on more than 60 granted US patents in the field of algal technology, and he has authored or co-authored a number of publications based on his research. He received his Ph.D. in Aquatic Ecology from the University of California at Davis. He completed his postdoctoral Research at the University of California, San Diego at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Science at the University of Colorado in Boulder.
