PET is widely used in the production of plastic packaging, textile fibers and over 500 billion units of plastic bottles are produced annually. With consumerism on the rise, the market is expected to grow at 4.8% annually from 2017 to 2025.
However, plastics causes a huge impact to the environment, and the plastics packaging industry today faces fundamental challenges related to sustainability and is striving to adopt circular economy norms.
Technology provider - CARBIOS has produced the first PET-bottles made with 100% Purified Terephthalic Acid (rPTA). The PET bottle is derived from plastic waste that is treated with enzymatic biorecycling.
CARBIOS says that the biological process can break down all kinds of PET plastic waste (clear, colored, opaque and complex) into its original components and can be reused to produce virgin plastic products for applications such as PET-bottles.
