SODEN to develop 60-70 MW Biomass Power Plant in Ivory Coast

Posted on : 24 Jul, 2019

Ivory Coast produces about 2 million tonnes of cocoa annually. The country is well poised to use its thousands of tonnes of cocoa pods (that are currently discarded after the beans are removed) to fuel biomass power.

There are some biomass power projects that are on the anvil. This includes the Société des Energies Nouvelles (SODEN), an Ivorian energy company, that is developing a 60-70MW biomass-to-energy plant fueled by cocoa waste in Divo. The project has already received a $996,238 grant from U.S. agency for trade and development (USTDA) to conduct feasibility studies.

Although Ivory Coast has a reliable power supply and exports electricity to neighboring countries, its domestic consumption has risen and the government is planning to increase installed capacity to 4,000 MW by 2020, from the current 2,275 MW.

Learn more about the project from lead speaker - Société des Energies Nouvelles (SODEN) at CMT’s 3rd Biomass Trade and BioEnergy Africa Summit in Abidjan, Cote D'Ivoire on 25-26 September, 2019.
