Japanese government’s global warming prevention plan says that the country can reduce 2.09 million tons of CO2 emissions by increasing the amount of domestic bioplastic shipments to 1.97 million tons by fiscal 2030.
Meanwhile it has an interim goal of producing 790,000 tons of bioplastics in the fiscal year 2020, therefore the government aims to enhance production volumes of bioplastics significantly.
To encourage more bioplastics production, Japan’s Environment Ministry is planning to provide subsidies for development of bioplastics technologies and bioplastics production.
The ministry has made a budgetary provision of ¥5 billion ($45 million) in its budgetary request for next fiscal year for projects by companies as well as universities that can study methods, develop technologies for replacing plastic packaging with bioplastics as well as expand and improve bioplastic production facilities in Japan.
