With Washington and Beijing set to sign a “phase one” trade deal on 15 Jan 2020, the aversion of further trade tensions is “positive news” for all countries. Haiwan Chemical Co. has awarded a technology contract to KBR for a new 320,000-t/y phenol and acetone facility to be built in Dongjiakou Industrial Zone, Qingdao City, Shandong Province, China, as per Apic-online.

Reliance confirms $9.8 billion COTC project in India. In the C3 chain, the complex will produce among other chemicals, 1.5 mmt/yr of Cumene, 1 mmt/yr of Phenol, 620,000 mt/yr of Acetone, 500,000 mt/yr of BPA, 600,000 mt/yr of PC, 250,000 mt/yr of Isopropyl Alcohol.

China has imposed anti-dumping duties on phenol imported from the United States, the European Union, South Korea, Japan and Thailand starting on 6 Sept 2019. According to the Ministry of Commerce, those countries and regions' dumping of phenols caused "substantial damage" to China's domestic industry. The tariffs, ranging from 10.6 percent to 287.2 percent, will last for five years! How will these antidumping measures change the trade flow in the region?
