How will trade war uncertainties reign in on the region's PET & Polyester market including China's expansion plans ?

PX, PTA market in Asia is expected to see a surge in new supply, as new capacities, mostly situated in China are due to come on stream eventually reducing China’s reliance on PX imports.

However, given the uncertainties in the global macroeconomic outlook and US-China trade frictions, can China’s downstream demand absorb this additional supplies?

US unfavorable taxes on downstream products of polyester products , apparels and shoes will also weigh on buying sentiment.

With impending weak sales performance in the polyester sector this could delay start up of these new capacities.

Can Asian PET exports growth further in regionally over supplied markets?

According to market reports, Asia-Pacific region dominated the global rPET market in 2018, which accounted for more than 50% of the market share.

This trend is expected to continue as brandowners pledge the increase in usage of recycled materials in their products.

Last year, Indonesia’s leading bottles water brand Aqua under Danone revealed its first 100% rPET bottle.

Danone, is committed to ensure all its packaging will become 100% reusable, recyclable and compostable products by 2025 and, to accelerate this transition, it is taking the lead as a recycler in Indonesia  by  engaging directly with consumers to increase recycling rates, support pioneering technologies & social business programs to clean plastic waste from the environment, to make its entire package 100%.

  • Can current recycling technologies & waste collection systems in Asia meet circular economy objectives ?
  • What is being done to improve PET recyclability and quality across all value chains ?
  • With leading fashion brands announcing their commitments to use only recycled polyester from waste bottles,is there simply enough rPET material for these markets ?
  • What are the recent breakthroughs in PET/Polyester chemical recycling technologies that can boost supply ?

Coming to Bali Indonesia, this 13-15th of November, CMT’s 9th ASIA PET, Polyester & Recycling conference that will share current insights and industry news that will shape the PET/ Polyester value chain going forward.

Key highlights
  • Initiatives on improving recovery rates - Upgrading of waste collection infrastructures, separation & dedicated deposit systems
  • Regulations updates from Indonesia, Australia, Taiwan, Philippines, Japan
  • PET and rPET growth outlook in Asia
  • Status of PET recycling in Indonesia
  • Expanding PET recycling capacities in Japan
The level of PET bottle recycling in Japan is among the highest in the world – around 85%. With the pledge by brandowners to increase recycled materials in their packaging, PET recyclers have to play catch up to meet the increasing demand
  • Bracing for China’s massive PX capacities – Can Asia’s downstream PTA – Polyester fiber markets absorb the new supply ?
  • Developments in Thailand’s packaging regulations in preparation for use of rPET for food contact
Thailand’s government recently set a target to recycle all plastic in the country by 2030. Plastics recyclers and suppliers are waiting for a change to a regulation to allow r-PET to be used in packaging for food and drinks.
  • Infinite chemical recycling technologies of PET
  • Optimising rPET content for brandowners
  • H&M Indonesia - Accelerating towards a sustainable fashion industry
  • Polyester chemical recycling technology from Japan
  • Upcycling garment waste and used PET bottles to close the loop for textile production

    and many more…!

Industry News

PET is widely used in the production of plastic packaging, textile fibers and over 500 billion units of plastic bottles are produced annually. With consumerism on the rise, the market is expected to grow at 4.8% annually from 2017 to 2025.

However, plastics causes a huge impact to the environment, and the plastics packaging industry today faces fundamental challenges related to sustainability and is striving to adopt circular economy norms.

Technology provider - CARBIOS has produced the first PET-bottles made with 100% Purified Terephthalic Acid (rPTA). The PET bottle is derived from plastic waste that is treated with enzymatic biorecycling.

CARBIOS says that the biological process can break down all kinds of PET plastic waste (clear, colored, opaque and complex) into its original components and can be reused to produce virgin plastic products for applications such as PET-bottles.

Indorama Ventures is investing $1.5 billion in its recycling business in the next 5 years. Currently, the chemical major has 11 recycling sites around the world, including plants in Thailand, Mexico and France.

The new investment is expected to include greenfield and brownfield mergers and acquisitions focusing on bottle-to-bottle recycling.

Indorama – that supplies PET plastics to brand owners such as Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Nestle – still has its main business in PET resins production – that is used to make plastic bottles and fibers.

As consumers are becoming more conscious of the environmental impact of single-use plastic and regulators are pushing for more recycling, more and more PET producers are expanding their recycling business.

Indorama also plans to invest an additional $500 million, to help its customers achieve the European Commission’s mandate that requires them to incorporate 25% of recycled plastic in PET bottles by 2025.

Jakarta based stock company Asiaplast is operating their business in the plastics industry since 1992. Along with rising environmental awareness of the Indonesian market and visionary sustainability goals of Asiaplast, the corporation took the trendsetting decision to use post-consumer recycled PET flakes as a raw material source for its future production. This pioneering step pushed Asiaplast in a leading position in rPET sheet production in Southeast Asia.

"The potential with using post-consumer PET flakes as a raw material source is supporting Asiaplast`s philosophy in going-green in perfect way. We follow this goal in all dimensions of our business activities" says Wilson Pranoto, CEO of PT Asiaplast Industries Tbk. Due to this new focus Asiaplast was forced to find a new approach related to that business field and to decide for a very distinct technology. Besides that, complying with all relevant directives and regulations stipulated by legislation and increasing environmental awareness of consumers are of major importance for a stock company like Asiaplast.

"The state of the art technology exceeds strictest standards and regulations worldwide and allows Asiaplast to set new standards in terms of the production of sustainable rPET sheet. Starlinger viscotec provides a bulletproof concept that makes an important contribution to set highest standards within the industry," states Wilson Pranoto. In terms of 24/7 production the most relevant factors are flexibility and efficiency in order to keep costs, especially material costs at a minimum.
