Africa’s construction boom has opened up a whole new world of business for building material manufacturers and suppliers. While it has allowed established businesses to expand, it has also attracted a host of new entrants to the continent. Competition is expected to intensify across Africa as cement producers continue to start up new cement capacity across the region.

BUA has started the construction of another greenfield cement plant in Sokoto State with an annual capacity of 1.5 million tonnes at a cost of over $300 million which will be inaugurated in 2018.

The transformation of limestone to clinker is particularly energy intensive, while electricity costs are also high in Africa. Clinker imports seems to be the more logical solution. However, there are very few grinding plants located within ports or have their own berth in Africa. Most use regular ports to import their clinker, which are usually congested. How can this be addressed with the fiery growth in new grinding units? In addition, which grinding technologies are more competitive and offer higher efficiency?
South Africa cement industry faces challenging times with the lack of major infrastructure projects & rising imported cement. According to reports, cement maker Lafarge Africa could put up its South African unit for sale this year and potentially use the proceeds to strategically shore up and stabilise its Nigerian business, experts have said, signalling potential mergers and acquisitions in the continent's rapidly growing cement industry.

Les importations de clinker semblent être la solution la plus logique. Cependant, il y a très peu de broyeurs situés dans les ports ou ayant leur propre poste en Afrique. La plupart utilisent des ports réguliers pour importer leur clinker, qui sont généralement encombrés. Comment cela peut-il être résolu avec la croissance de nouvelles unités de broyage ? De plus, quelles sont les technologies de broyage les plus compétitives et efficacités ?
L’industrie du ciment en Afrique du Sud est confrontée à une période difficile avec l’absence de grands projets d’infrastructure et l’augmentation du ciment importé. Selon des experts, le cimentier Lafarge Africa pourrait mettre en vente son unité sud-africaine cette année et utiliser les bénéfices pour consolider stratégiquement et stabiliser son activité nigériane, signalant des fusions et acquisitions potentielles dans l’industrie du ciment en pleine croissance du continent.
