Asia, as evident from the above headlines, promises strong market growth and demand for coatings solutions. The construction and automotive industries in Asia, particularly China and India, are expected to continue its expansion. Thus investments for localized coating production as well as R&D have been inked, to enable efficient and faster reaction to customer requirements, and maintain long-term competitiveness in this important sector.
The “Sustainability” wave or requirement is steering the global coatings industry to be consciously responsible on their solution offerings as well as their production operations. Recent new production facility in Thailand is slated to use state-of-the art technology that seeks to maximize operational efficiency and minimize waste generation. Meanwhile, in the auto coatings, progress have been made with the first successful application of a clearcoat containing a (70%-biomass composition) bio-based hardener.
Stricter environmental move towards low or zero VOC regulations, have motivated the green routes in coating formulations. The new rules are enforcing the transition from various solvent-based paints to water borne coatings. The global market for coatings with low or zero VOC content is forecast to reach $85.7 billion by 2018, spurred by the expansion by major manufacturers in China and India. The marine industry can also expect improvements in operational, cost and environmental efficiency, thanks to high-performing antifouling coatings.

Clariant – a leading specialty chemicals company is increasing its footprint in Asia with a new additives business expansion in China. The new facilities are going to be built at Clariant’s site in Zhenjiang, China, slated to commence operations in 2018.
The multi-million CHF investment will add the first two fully-owned production facilities to the company’s regional network of commercial and technical support.
The facilities will offer performance additive solutions for packaging, automotive and micronised waxes for various coatings & inks applications. The solutions are expected to improve end product properties, extend energy conservation and have higher recyclability – all in tune to China’s demand for sustainable products. In fact China’s 13th Five Year Plan and the industrial policy ‘Made in China 2025’ emphasizes a lot on environmentally-compatible and safe products.
The new facilities will also cater to the growing demand for innovative and sustainable solutions in the Asia region – especially water-based coatings market in Asia Pacific region that is estimated to grow from US$15bn in 2015 to US$19bn by 2020. Plus, Clariant is also looking to shorten supply lead times and deliver customised high-tech solutions in this region via the new additions. Further local production in China will enable Clariant to be in a better position in terms of growth perspectives of the Asia region, especially that of China.

China’s rapidly growing high-speed rail transportation has also accelerated demand for future high-speed systems to operate quietly and sustainably.
As such Shanghai’s new Metro Line 17 will use Axalta-Huajia Coatings’ – powder coatings that ensure sound barrier, superior corrosion resistance and durability. Axalta-Huajia Coatings is expected to collaborate with SHAZC Group for the metro project – that will use premium powder coating – Alesta® AR that promises to protect the sound management structures along the Qingpu section of the line.
Axalta-Huajia Coatings is a joint venture between Axalta Coating Systems (AXTA) and Huangshan Yongjia Group Co.
The coating used in the metro line features architectural grade fluoropolymer powder coating technology compliant with the most stringent exterior performance standards of the architectural industry. In addition, Axalta’s AR500-UD series of products also feature environmentally responsible formulations and ultra-low VOC to offer excellent protection and high color accuracy as well as gloss-stability along with easy-care, easy-clean and anti-graffiti properties.
Axalta has worked with China’s rail transportation industry previously. Axalta’s coating solutions are used in the high-speed trains of Harbin Dalian railway, as well as on trains in the extension section of Tianjin Urban Rail Line 1 and the Beijing Metro Line 15.
However, Axalta’s Alesta AR powder coatings is being used for the first time in China’s railways.
More on use of powder coatings will be discussed at 17th Asia Coatings Markets on 24-25 August, 2017 in Bangkok, Thailand.
