CIMAF opens newly constructed cement plant in Ghana

This year, LafargeHolcim Côte d’Ivoire will increase its cement production capacity to over 2 MTA – doubling its current capacity in the country.
LafargeHolcim inaugurated its sixth grinding unit at Bouaké which will enable the cement giant to increase its capacity. Built at a cost of US$20.1 million, with this Bouaké facility, LafargeHolcim can sell Bélier cement in Côte d’Ivoire’s domestic market.
Last April, LafargeHolcim had launched a second cement plant in San Pedro. With the commissioning of Bouaké, the cement major will own 2.3Mta of capacity in Côte d’Ivoire.
Besides LafargeHolcim, other players are also stepping up activities in the Côte d’Ivoire cement market. Dangote Cement is constructing a new 3 MTPA capacity cement grinding plant, CIMAF increasing its total production capacity to 2 MTPA with a new 1 MTPA greenfield unit in San Pedro while Turkish Limak Group & Ivorian Company Afrikbat Groups are constructing a 1MTPA cement unit and one million cubic meters of ready-mix concrete plant in this West African country.

West Africa’s cement markets are expected to grow as construction demand makes a comeback in the region. As a matter of fact Morocco’s cement giant Ciments de l’Afrique (Cimaf) is all set to start a new plant in Bouake, Côte d’Ivoire.
Estimated to cost €20 million, the new cement plant will be Cimaf’s third production site in the country. With the new plant, Cimaf is aiming to produce 350,000 tons of cement per annum – which can establish it as the biggest cement producer at 2.3 million tons.
Earlier in 2016, Cimaf had announced its second cement plant at San Petro, near the port of Abidjan. Its first plant is also located in the capital – Abidjan.
Cimaf is already in the process of acquiring land for the new plant in Bouake.
Bouake is chosen as the location for the new plant as it is the primary business hub for Côte d’Ivoire. Africa’s Dangote Cement is another key player eyeing the Bouake region. Dangote is planning investments of approximately $229 million in the region too.
Cimaf also has a large footprint in Africa across Burkina Faso, Ghana, Guinea Conakry, Gabon, and Cameron. Besides, the Moroccan cement giant is also hopeful of procuring operating licences in Congo Brazzaville and Mali.
