“Improve Market Share & Seeking New Sector Growth in Current Tough Economy”

The key end-user industries for the Paints & Coatings market include Building & Construction, Automotive, and Medical & Healthcare. In Asia, a strong growth in construction is likely to surge demand for paints and coatings across residential and commercial segments; Singapore expects to spend $34 billion on construction contracts this year alone. Increasing vehicle production in countries such as China, Indonesia, and India are contributing to growth in the automotive coatings sector, as well as a growing demand for well-maintained used vehicles. In addition, rapid economic progression, increasing government spending, and advancements in road infrastructure will also drive growth for the coatings industry.

Stricter environmental mindfulness and the move towards low or zero VOC regulations, have motivated scientists and technicians to adopt greener routes for developing coating formulations. The new rules are causing a transition from various solvent-based paints to a greater use of waterborne coatings. The global market for coatings with low or zero VOC content is forecast to reach $85.7 billion by 2018, spurred by the expansion by major manufacturers in China and India. The marine industry can also expect improvements in operational, cost and environmental efficiency, thanks to high-performing antifouling coatings.

Akzonobel Starts Up Decorative Paints Plant In Chengdu

Posted on : 01 Jul, 2016

AkzoNobel has started production at its fourth and largest decorative paints plant in China. The new plant in Chengdu is part of AkzoNobel’s US $57.2 million investment plan to build manufacturing facilities for both powder coatings and decorative paints. Construction on the plant – which will manufacture AkzoNobel's full range of decorative paint offerings – began in 2014 and it is expected to be fully operational by next year.

Rapid urbanisation in China has meant an increased demand for paints and coatings, and AkzoNobel’s new plant is a response to this demand. With three other decorative paints production plants in Guangzhou, Shanghai and Langfang that cover the southern, eastern and northern regions of the country, the Chengdu site will extend their reach to southwestern and northwestern regions.

In China, the government’s push towards environmentally friendly coatings with low VOC or zero VOC will outpace the whole coatings industry’s development. According to China’s National Coatings Industry Association, by 2020, 57 per cent of China’s total coating output will be eco-friendly. It is reported that the waterborne coatings market is expected to reach $75 billion by 2020; in Asia, demand for waterborne coatings has been increasing as automobile manufacturers Toyota, Honda, and Hyundai have started applying water-based systems in their new product lines. Powder coatings are also expected to make continued headway.

More about the impact of VOC tax and environmental regulations on coatings market in China & Asia, plus prospects of powder coatings, will be discussed in Bangkok at the 16th Asia Coatings Markets summit this 4-5 Aug 2016.  Some of the key sessions and speakers to be featured include:

JAC Motors begins use of VOC-free Powder Auto Body Coatings

Posted on : 09 May, 2016

In alignment with China’s endeavour to use VOC-free coatings as a definite move towards sustainability, paints and coatings manufacturer AkzoNobel, along with Chinese automaker JAC Motors, have pioneered the first use of VOC-free powder technology for automotive body coatings. Using powder coatings is a sustainable way of streamlining auto manufacturing equipment and processes, and ensures higher efficiency and fewer emissions.

As sustainability continues to gain increasing importance in China, JAC has been using the VOC-free powder on SLX truck bodies at their site in Mengcheng. The high-performance powder, which offers benefits such as minimising resource wastage and environmental pollution, allows Chinese automakers to meet new coatings standards and represents a major technological breakthrough in the coatings sector.

Given the successful use of the VOC-free body coatings, JAC is already planning its second powder coating line.
