Tapping on the Growing Biomass Demand in China, Japan & South Korea

According to Enerone's recent report, Korean wood pellet imports grew by almost 300% in November 2013 and 2014's Q1 trade has been very lively with over 280,000 tons of imported wood pellets. Still, USD23.8 million of RPS penalty was imposed in 2013 as the six power supplying subsidiaries of Gencos recorded only about 60% fulfillment of the Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS). So with the liberalization to allow imports of other pelletized biomass (e.g. from Oil Palm Pellet, Torrefied Pellet) into Korea from July 2014, this growth is set to continue as the Korean gencos' co-firing requirement is estimated to be higher than the current imported volume.

Japan is expected to increase importation of energy chips and wood pellets. Up until this year, Japan has imported only very limited volumes of wood pellet, primarily from Canada, but it is likely that import volumes of both pellets and energy chips will increase in the coming years. Major oil wholesaler Showa Shell Sekiyu is spending USD164 million to build Japan's largest biomass power plant of 49MW in Kawasaki near Tokyo

Paper manufacturers in Japan such as Oji Paper and Nippon Paper are hopping on the Japanese government's feed-in tariff (FIT) bandwagon by plugging into the biomass power generation with the wasted wood chips from forest thinning.

Major Japanese and Korean energy and trading companies are already exploring the opportunities to import pellets from Australia, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Canada and the US. To meet this almost insatiable appetite, global suppliers are cranking up their production supply and logistics chain for export-ready pellets. Foreign investments and indigenous partnership are also fast-tracking the development of wood pellet production in Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam as well as other high calorific value biomass fuel such as Palm Pellets, PKS, etc. Bio-Coal, or torrefied Pellet, has also evolved from R&D to commercial productions globally and here in Asia!

The competition is intensifying and the action is right here in Asia. Attend CMT's Biomass Pellets Trade & Power and secure deals and partnerships.

Industry News

Vietnam Institute of Energy under the Ministry of Industry and Trade recently said that over ten investors have shown keen interest in biomass power projects in Vietnam, which will have an average capacity of 10 MW each.

These developments comes in after Vietnam's Prime Minister's decision (March, 2014) to support the development of biomass power projects in the country.

Vietnam Institute of Energy said it is committed to build power plants of 5MW to 30MW each. But it requires guidance to implement these projects. The proposed projects are likely to drive public and private investment in the biomass power sector.

Vietnam already has a few bagasse-fueled power plants that sold biomass power to Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) for 4 cents per kWh. Now the prices have risen to 5.3 cents. Plus, in line with the decision to support biomass power projects, EVN is required to buy biomass power.

The proposed biomass projects will also prove to be an alternative source of income for the local sugar industry that is reeling under the decline of sugar prices which is said to fall further in the future. As many as 40 sugar refineries might have to invest in biomass power plants in Vietnam as an alternative source of income.

Meanwhile, Can Tho Sugar Joint Stock Company has revealed that it has the required funds to start a 30MW bagasse-fueled power plant with an investment of US$1 million for each MW.

The company expects its bagasse-fired power project to commence operations in September 2017, if everything goes as per plans.

Although Vietnam, currently, doesn't have any licensed or listed biomass power projects in its national electricity development plan, the country has a potential to produce 150 million tons of biomass per year which is equivalent to 50 million tons of crude oil.

More on biomass power will be discussed at 5th Biomass Pellets Trade & Power on 23-25 September, 2014 in Seoul.

A 75-megawatt biomass power station will be built by Japan's Sumitomo Corp. via Summit Energy Corporation (a power producer and supplier that is wholly owned by Sumitomo Corp.) in the city of Handa, Aichi prefecture. Named as Handa Biomass Power Plant, the facility will be a new power supply source for Summit Energy's electric power retail business.

The construction of the biomass plant is slated to begin in August this year, while commercial operations will commence in 2016.

The 75MW biomass power plant will be Japan's largest pure-biomass-fired power plant.

Pegged at 20 billion yen ($197 million), the project is the second biomass power plant for Summit Energy. The first being Itoigawa Biomass Power Plant (50MW).

Sumitomo Corporation's Materials & Supplies Division will provide biomass fuel to the new plant.

The 2 companies that intend to increase their renewable power supply, is also planning similar projects. While a new biomass power plant is under feasibility study in eastern Japan, several other solar and wind power projects are in the pipeline.

Mr. Tony Kawabe, Senior Managing Director of Summit Energy Corporation will speak on 'FIT, Biomass to Power Development in Japan & Summit Energy's Itoigawa Biomass Power Station (SMP)' at 5th Biomass Pellets Trade & Power opening on 23-25 September, 2014 in Seoul.

South Korea is proposing a lower trade barrier for renewable energy based products and services. This proposal is in tune with the country's plans to promote the global use of clean energy.

The country believes that the clean energy sector will attract more investments only when clean energy products and services are guaranteed easy access to markets in different countries across the world. However, the standards vary from one country to another and because of the fact that there is no international regulation, clean energy products and services are finding it difficult to reach overseas markets.

South Korea plan to remove trade barriers such as non-tariff barriers, will include addressing international standards and regulations for clean energy products.

As per South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy estimates, the global clean energy products market shows a decline in investment from US$31.8 billion in 2011 to $28.6 billion in 2012 and to $25.4 billion in 2013.

South Korea also plans to revive the investment scenario by creating a new working group, which will specifically look into enhancing global market access of clean energy products.

Plus, South Korea also has plans to recognize the 10 most prominent energy technologies, including carbon capture, use and storage technology, that are expected to lead the industry over the next 10 years.

More on South Korea's clean energy initiatives will be discussed at 5th Biomass Pellets Trade & Power on 23-25 September, 2014 in Seoul.

Kleangas Energy Technologies, Inc., a R&D company dedicated to producing alternative clean technologies that promote energy efficiency throughout a wide range of applications, recently received an order to deliver about 5,000 to 10,000 Metric Tons of pellets per month to South Korea via its wholly owned subsidiary - Green Day Technologies.

Under the 12-month long agreement, Green Day Technologies will earn over $800,000 to as much as $1,700,000 per month.

The subsidiary has ramped up its production capabilities to meet the requirements of the order. With such expansion, Green Day expects to earn several more orders over the next few months.

With increasing environmental concerns over coal and crude products, clean and environment friendly products such as pellets are in huge demand. Kleangas expects revenues from pellet orders to double and triple in the next 12 months given the increase in demand for pellets in both domestic and overseas markets.

Inspired by such developments, CMT will host its 5th Biomass Pellets Trade & Power conference to be held from 23-25 September, 2014 in Seoul, South Korea to provide latest updates on biomass pellets and industry trends.
