In a move towards connecting Myanmar to the rest of the world, French company Orange Telecom collaborated with the state-based Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications (MPT) in December 2013 to provide international roaming services in Myanmar as well as in other countries.
As per the agreement, people visiting Myanmar can now make calls using their foreign SIM cards while people with MPT SIM cards can make calls while visiting other countries.
Phase 1 of the project is said to allow two-way roaming facilities with 64 operators across 33 countries, which also include ASEAN nations.
The roaming services have already begun, since the commencement of Southeast Asian Games held in Myanmar in December 2013.
Orange has further plans to extend the service to more countries. Meanwhile in November 2013, Singapore-based telecom company SingTel began international roaming services in Myanmar, but it was restricted to SMS only.

Digicel and Ooredoo have signed a deal to construct telecommunications towers in Myanmar. Digicel Asian Holdings, which is a consortium of Digicel Group, Yoma Strategic and First Myanmar Investment Co Ltd (FMI), will develop, construct and lease telecommunications towers in the country via its Myanmar unit - Myanmar Tower Company. This initiative by Digicel is one of the first few telecommunications tower projects to come up in the country.
Digicel will deploy multi-tenancy towers so that all telecommunications operators in the country can achieve their plans of telecom coverage across the country.
The high quality telecommunications network across Myanmar will contribute to the growth of the economy and benefit citizens in all the states, regions and union territories.
Ooredoo - the operator from Qatar - has already won the telecom tender to operate in Myanmar. The other international operator to win the tender is Norway's Telenor. However, the two companies are yet to receive their licences to operate. The licence, once received, will allow Ooredoo to operate for 15 years in Myanmar alongside Telenor, state-owned Myanmar Posts and Telecommunication (MPT), and Yatanarpon Teleport (YTP).

Myanmar's new telecommunications bill was passed by the Parliament in August 2013, signed by the President U Thein Sein in October 2013, and now the law has come into effect.
The new law grants foreign telecom companies to operate in the country with license duration ranging from a minimum of five years to a maximum period of 20 years.
The government has already liberalised the bidding process by inviting international telecom operators. Two operators, Qatar's Ooredoo and Norway's Telenor became the first international companies to win licenses to operate in Myanmar.
CMT's 2nd Myanmar Telecoms & Infrastructure Summit coming to Yangon on 17-18 February, 2014 will bring together telecom operators, policy and regulators, infrastructure and network service providers/ developers, technology providers, telecom equipment manufacturers, infrastructure equipment providers and many other stakeholders to discuss the rapid changes in the telecom sector of Myanmar.
Top of the agenda will be to discuss the mobile phone market plans, in particular Telenor's announcement to provide 'affordable phones' to the population. The government is also making efforts to lower prices of SIM cards and mobile phones.
With mobile phones becoming affordable and the new law allowing foreign stakeholders to operate, the Myanmar government should be able to achieve it plans to increase the mobile phone users to 80 percent by 2015. In fact in the month of October, mobile phone users in the country increased to 5.55 million, accounting for 10 percent of the total population.
