Industrial Biotech will account for 10% of sales within the chemical industry by 2010, up from 7% in 2005 - according to a report by McKinsey. Most of that comes from biofuels. European chemicals companies are investing in white biotech in a big way and with oil prices above $50 a barrel, biopolymers, biochemicals can be profitable.

Governments across the globe are leaning increasingly towards alternative energy as crude prices continue to climb. Many new players are getting into the game and those who have already established production in biodiesel will sustain profits over the long term.

How can conventional refiners benefit ? Should they invest and integrate into biodiesel production?

In Oct , Novamont Italia announced plans to build a refinery to raise output of it Master-Bi bioplastics while some existing refineries like Neste are integrating their refinery operations with biodiesel production.

The costs of integrations must be weighed against strategic & environmental benefits of investment- the type of feedstock used, the technologies, tax incentives are some of the key considerations.

CMT’s BioRefintec conference is designed to discuss critical issues in the industry from recent biorefinery activities to technologies, products, logistics & environmental issues

Key Highlights
