World's first palm-based commercial scale bio-compressed natural gas plant-
Felda's success story

ABSTRACT

Felda Palm Industries Sdn Bhd ( FPISB ) is one of the major palm oil producing company in Malaysia, owning and operating 69 mills across Malaysia and producing close to 3 million tonnes of CPO annually. It also consistently developing and operating biogas plant in mills, utilizing POME as feedstock to produce on average 22 – 30 m3 of biogas per tonne of POME. Biogas, consisting of 55 – 65% methane is valuable due to its calorific energy content. FPISB have already run 25 biogas plant, in which 5 of the plant are producing electricity to national & local grid. In order to diversify utilization of biogas, FPISB has been collaborating with Malaysian Palm Oil Board ( MPOB ) and Sime Darby Offshore Engineering ( SDOE ) to develop the first in the world, commercial-scale palm-based bio-compressed natural gas plant in Felda Sg Tengi Palm Oil Mill. The plant, launched by the Honourable Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities Malaysia in October 2015, has been producing commercial compressed natural gas ( CNG ) to industrial customer in Serendah, Selangor. The plant will be a benchmark and reference for more bioCNG plant in the future as well as to demonstrate suitability of energy produced from renewable sources to industrial application.
