Dr. Herve Vanderschuren

Herve Vanderschuren

Hervé Vanderschuren holds a BSc in Agricultural Sciences and MSc in Crop Science from Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech (Liege University, Belgium) and AgroParisTech (France). He has a PhD in Plant Biotechnology from ETH Zurich (Switzerland). He currently leads the cassava research group at ETH Zurich. Over the last 9 years, his research has focused on the development of biotechnological tools to improve cassava. Transgenic cassava resistant to biotic and abiotic stresses (viral diseases, post-harvest physiological deterioration) as well as transgenic lines with improved nutrient content have been successfully generated by his research group. Other ongoing activities include root development analysis, yield improvement, resistance to bacterial blight and drought tolerance. In addition to the biotechnological approaches, his research group uses cutting-edge technologies to investigate fundamental aspects of stress response in cassava.

Over the last 2 years the ETH cassava research group has been actively involved in technology transfer to Africa. Through collaborative work with teams in Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa it was demonstrated that cassava transformation can be robustly established in African laboratories. The efforts of the ETH cassava research group to empower scientists and institutions in the South have been recently acknowledged by the SFIAR award.
