B.S. Chemistry and Ph.D. Biochemistry  from the University of California Berkeley.  Postdoctoral work at U.C. San Diego, Associate Researcher, Dept. Civil Engineering, U.C. Berkeley, CEO /Founder EnBio, Inc. Associate Professor Dept. Applied Biology, Georgia Inst. of Technology. Founder-director  of the Institute for Environmental Management, Inc., a not-for-profit R&D organization active in solid waste management (1989 -present).  Founder/CEO, 2008 - present, MicroBio Engineering, Inc., a wastewater and algal biofuels research- engineering company started (with Prof. Tryg Lundquist, California State Polytechnic University).  Founding Director of the not-for-profit, Algal Biomass Organization (2008-present).  Also independent consultant and active in several scientific organizations, author of over a hundred publications and presenter/ keynote speaker at many conferences.

Mr. Vitor Verdelho Vieira

-Mr Vítor Verdelho Vieira has a background in Physics from the Sciences Faculty at the University of Porto, having worked in biotechnology projects for the last 20 years.

 

His first biotech business started in 1989 with Necton S.A. (marine biotechnology company with commercial production and sale of microalgae since 1997 for aquaculture and cosmetics) where he is the President. The production system was initially based in raceways and then moved into several types of photobioreactors (plate, tubular, greenwall), growing both marine and freshwater species.

 

He has been involved in 11 European and 48 National research projects under different frameworks and programs.

 

He is currently the Chief Development Officer of AlgaFuel, S.A. (www.algafuel.pt), a spin-out company from Necton S.A., dedicated to the development and implementation of microalgae Production Units in high-emitting industries for CO2 mitigation with production of biomass. AlgaFuel has the largest outdoor photobioreactor in operation in Europe in operation since March 2009 and in last December received a European Environmental Award (www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqnS7W0aXxc). AlgaFuel is a leading partner in the two largest projects approved by the European Commission in 2010 for research and demonstration for microalgae technologies for biofuels and added value products.

 

Mr Vítor Verdelho is also a member of the Steering Committee of the European Algae Biomass Association).

Dr. Mi-Kyung Kim

Dr. Mi-Kyung Kim has a background in Phycology of Ph D. degree from the University of Paris. She has been working in Oceanography and Limnoloy projects related with microalgae at the Marine Science Research Center, Yeungnam University, Korea for the last 20 years. She is an unique and first phycologist to establish the microalgal company in Korea. She studied the application of animal wastewater to enhance the biomass and applied for domestic and international patents.

 

Her first biotech business started in 2007 with EcoPhycoTech Ltd. (microalgae company with commercial production and sale of microalgae for aquaculture and cosmetics) where she is the President. The production system was initially based in aquatic plants (water tank) and then changed photobioreactors (tubular), growing both marine and freshwater species. EcoPhyco Tech Co. is producing the new beverage as using Chlorella and deep seawater at the depth of 1500 m originated from the East Sea, Korea and will do research and development more the fuctional beverage of Chlorella supported by Korean government.

 

She is currently the Chief Development Officer of EcoPhyco Tech Co.. (www.ecophycotech.com), a spin-out company from Il-Hae Aquaculture Co. dedicated to the development and implementation of microalgae Production Units with production of biomass.

Mr. Tony St Clair

Tony StClair

Tony St Clair was Chief Executive of Federated Farmers of New Zealand for eight years (1997-2005); the organisation had approximately 19000 farm members at the end of Tony's tenure. He has been on multiple committees at CEO level within New Zealand which have involved international trade, food safety, human capacity building, farm safety, various emergency response groups for both adverse events and biosecurity.

Over this time in New Zealand he has also represented the Agriculture Sector in W.T.O forums (Seattle, Cancun) and International Federation of Agricultural Producers ,Cairns Group Farm leaders and CER Ministerials. He was Chair of the Australian New Zealand Business Council in 2004; Tony also attended the COP 15 in Copenhagen in late 2009.

Prior to his time in New Zealand he was Executive Director of the Victorian Farmers Federation (1990-97) and had extensive commodity trading and commercial background in the agricultural production and processing industry. This included terms as a livestock auctioneer, Commercial Manager for Uncle Ben's of Australia (1978 -85) and D.R.Johnston /Conagra (1986-1990).

Mr. Matthew Caspari

Matthew Caspari is responsible for cultivating strategic relationships and oversees the Company’s Australian operations. 

 

Prior to co-founding Aurora Algae, Matthew was a management consultant with Cambridge Pharma Consultancy, where he provided strategic advice to leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. His professional experience also includes time with Hana Biosciences, where he was involved in Business Development and Marketing, and with Bloomberg, LP, where he worked in Mergers and Acquisitions.

 

Matthew holds an MBA with a Certificate in Entrepreneurship from the University of California, Berkeley's Haas School of Business and a BS in Biochemistry from Georgetown University.

Dr. Rupert Craggs

Rupert Craggs

Dr. Craggs is a Principal Scientist and Manager of the Aquatic Pollution Group at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research in Hamilton, New Zealand. Dr. Craggs has worked in the area of microalgal wastewater treatment and beneficial use of wastewater grown algal biomass for 20 years. Dr. Craggs has specialized in resource (energy, nutrients and water) recovery from wastewater using enhanced pond-based treatment systems.

Dr. Craggs’ wastewater biofuels related research has focused on the design and operation of simple, cost-effective Covered Anaerobic Ponds for enhanced energy recovery from wastewater solids as biogas; and wastewater treatment High Rate Algal Ponds with CO2 addition for enhanced nutrient removal and production of algal biomass for use as fertiliser, feed, or conversion to biofuels (methane, ethanol, biodiesel and bio-crude oil).

Dr. Craggs leads two New Zealand government funded research programmes on energy recovery and biofuel production using enhanced wastewater treatment ponds and is currently operating a 5 ha demonstration wastewater algal production system

Dr. Neil Clarke
Dr Clarke obtained his PhD in Biology from MIT in 1987.  Following post-doctoral research in structural biology, he joined the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1991 as an Assistant, and then Associate Professor of Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry. In 2005 he moved to the Genome Institute of Singapore, where he is a Deputy Director. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Biochemistry at the National University of Singapore.

-Dongmei Wang, Research Assistant, Team Leader of Energy Algae in Functional Genomics Group, Qingdao Institute of BioEnergy and Bioprocess Technology(QIBEBT), Chinese Academy of Sciences (http://www.qibebt.ac.cn/; http://www.bioenergychina.org/).

 

She obtained PhD from Peking University on genetics and developmental biology and has published one paper on PNAS. Afterwards, she worked as a research assistant in QIBEBT, mainly focusing on the genomics and trancriptomics of biofuel algae. She also lead the Solexa sequencing platform, and is the coordinator of external collaborative projects

Choul Gyun-Lee

Dr. Choul-Gyun LEE is currently a professor in Department of Biological Engineering, Inha University, Incheon, Korea. His field of expertise is on culture of microalgae in various types of photobioreactors and on molecular/biotechnological studies of the microalgae based on whole cell genome-scale in silico modeling. On top of his research work, he has held a number of administrative positions in the University and in the Korean Government. He is the leader (Director) of Marine Bioenergy Research Consortium funded by Korean Government and is the Head of Institute of Industrial Biotechnology as well as Lipidomics Research Center. He got his Ph.D. in the Department of Chemical Engineering at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, USA in 1994 and he worked for NASA, Kennedy Space Center in Advance Life Support Team before joining Inha University

Will Ocean be the Blue Ocean for Future Fuels? – Development in Korea

Dr. Tom Beer

-Tom Beer, D.Sc., Ph.D. leads the Transport Technologies & Sustainable Fuels Stream of the Energy Transformed Flagship of CSIRO (the Australian Government's Research Agency)and is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Energy. 

 

He is an international expert on greenhouse gas and air quality issues and particularly their application to alternative transport fuels and health.  He was part of the team that won the CSIRO Chairman’s medal in 2000 with his component being the analysis of greenhouse gas emissions from hybrid electric vehicles. 

 

He has been a lead author, and an expert panel member for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which was awarded half of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. 

 

His expertise in transport fuels led him to advocate algae as a source of biodiesel and he represents CSIRO on the Algal Fuels Consortium of SARDI, Flinders University and CSIRO.

-With more than 25 years of senior management experience in the high tech industry, Paul Reep has a proven ability for facilitating government and private sector partnerships, including a major multi-agency technology transfer initiative with the Departments of Commerce, Energy, Interior, Agriculture, and the Environmental Protection Agency. The result of this work is still ongoing at the Department of Energy, where bio-energy is a key mission area.

 

He currently is a member of the licensing team at the Stevens Institute for Innovation at the University of Southern California, where he works directly alongside researchers and scientists to identify and develop patent and licensing opportunities for USC inventions.

Dr. Jean-Paul Schwitzguébel

-Dr Jean-Paul Schwitzguébel, French and Swiss citizen, is a plant and microbial biochemist, with Master in Biology from the University of Geneva, and PhD from the Department of Biochemistry (University of Geneva) on the intracellular compartmentation and regulation of carbon and energy metabolism in Neurospora crassa.

 

Afterwards he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Microbiology (ETH Zurich) on the regulation of C3 and C4 metabolism in Acetobacter aceti; at the Department of Botany of the Imperial College of Science and Technology in London (UK) on bioenergetics and alternative respiratory chains in plant and fungal mitochondria; and at the Laboratory of Plant Physiology of the University of Neuchatel, on plant mitochondria, peroxisomes and chloroplasts. His basic research was thus always focusing on the metabolism and bioenergetics of higher plants and microorganisms.

 

Afterwards he moved to the “Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne” (EPFL) as a permanent senior scientist at the Laboratory for Environmental Biotechnology. In addition to teaching and administrative duties, most of his work is now devoted to research and development in the fields of phytoremediation and bioenergy.

 

He was the initiator and coordinator of COST Action 837

(Plant biotechnology for the removal of organic pollutants and toxic metals from wastewaters and contaminated sites, 1998-2003, http://lbewww.epfl.ch/COST837) and COST Action 859 (Phytotechnologies to promote sustainable land use and improve food safety, 2004-2009, http://w3.gre.ac.uk/cost859/). In November 2009 he was appointed as the Swiss delegate on the Management Committee of the new COST Action CM0903 (Utilisation of biomass for sustainable fuels and chemicals, 2009-2013). In the framework of this network, he will develop collaboration with European colleagues to produce biofuels from microalgae and plant biomass.

 

Dr Jean-Paul Schwitzguébel is also the Swiss delegate on the COST Domain Committee on Food and Agriculture.

 

He is the subject editor for "Journal of Soils and Sediments", and member of

the editorial board of "International Journal of Phytoremediation" and of "Agrochimica".
