Peter Williams, Emeritus Professor of Biogeochemistry at the School of Ocean Sciences at the University of Wales in Bangor identified three major concerns affecting the viability of commercial production: The capital and operational costs of the plant; development work on the productivity of algae; and the cost of harvesting algae.” (extracted from Shell.com, authored by Wendel Broere, February 15, 2008).
Other factors that impinge commercialization include: access to high volume of water (which could limit the location of the plant); identifying the best strains for biofuel production; finding economical and efficient methods for harvesting
and oil extraction.
