Cost Efficient  Commercialization of Algae Biofuels
Latest advances and constraints in Cultivation, Harvesting and Processing
Asia/International Project Experience

Algae is no longer the pond scum, the environmental menace, it is now the darling of the biofuels industry. Boasting higher productivity compared to crop-based biofuels, energy and industrial majors like Shell, Chevron, Boeing, Airbus and giants Honeywell are heavily investing in research and development, racing to commercialise algae biofuel production.

“Research like that being done at the Colorado State University’s (CSU) Engines and Energy Conservation Laboratory and the University of New Hampshire (UNH), suggests that algae could supply enough fuel to meet all of America’s transportation needs in the form of biodiesel.”     The Green Chip Review (Special report), August 2008

However, several hurdles and production challenges must be addressed before Algae Biofuel can be produced on a large scale basis. Peter Williams, Emeritus Professor of Biogeochemistry at the School of Ocean Sciences at the University of Wales in Bangor identified three major concerns affecting the viability of commercial production: The capital and operational costs of the plant; development work on the productivity of algae; and the cost of harvesting algae.” (extracted from Shell.com, authored by Wendel Broere, February 15, 2008).

Other factors that impinge commercialization include: access to high volume of water (which could limit the location of the plant); identifying the best strains for biofuel production; finding economical and efficient methods for harvesting
and oil extraction.

Attend Algae World 2008 and gather critical information concerning algae cultivation and algae fuel production.
