Luncheon Sponsor Day 1

Opening Address by
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo
of the Republic of Philippines

The growth of the global biofuels market has been driven by government incentives and volatile fossil fuel prices. Governments around the world have promoted the use of biofuels in order to reduce air pollution and the reliance on imported fossil fuels, as well as to promote their agricultural industry.

Asia is especially abuzz with biofuels!

“Philippines Biofuels Act mandates the blending of 1% Biodiesel in all diesel products sold by April ’07 and 5% ethanol blend in all gasoline products by Jan ‘09’ .”
“Indonesia is targeting a 10% domestic usage of biofuels by 2010”
“Malaysian government has approved 52 biodiesel licences, with a cumulative capacity of 5 mn tons”
“Natural Fuel invests US$130 Million to build world’s largest biodiesel facility in Singapore”

Sugarcane, corn, and cassava are eyed for ethanol production, while biodiesel rely on palm (used in Malaysia, Indonesia) and coconut (used in Philippines) as the feedstock. These agricultural crops are major food sources and also have industrial uses. With increasing demand from ethanol and biodiesel production, will there be enough supply to fulfil all uses?

New crops, like sweet sorghum for bioethanol, and jatropha for biodiesel are showing great promise as alternative feedstocks. Big plans are in place for large scale plantations of the two crops. Looking into the future, lignocellulosic feedstock poses great potential because it reduces greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 85% over reformulated gasoline, much higher reduction compared to starch ethanol’s production plus it does not compete with food source.

CMT’s Biofuels & Feedstocks Philippines will bring together the most influential people in the Biofuels industry to discuss the development and growth of biofuels. This conference goes beyond just providing information, it is where serious business takes place in a conducive environment.
