Did you know that transport contributes to a quarter of the world’s energy use and one-fifth of global CO2 emissions? With fast-growing populations and emerging economies, there is a huge need to improve fuel efficiency and air quality by reducing CO2 emissions that contributes to global climate change.

   

Transport biofuel consumption needs to triple by 2030 to be on track with the Sustainable Development Scenario (SDS). Stronger policies and innovation to cut costs are crucial in scaling up both advanced biofuel consumption and the adoption of biofuels in road, aviation and marine transport. New policy schemes in India and China are anticipated to significantly boost the market for biofuels. Last year, India announced a national biofuels policy allowing ethanol production from agricultural waste and crops residue such as corn, cassava and sugarcane. China is extending its 10 per cent ethanol-blending mandate nationwide. At the moment China’s bioenergy capacity principally uses energy from waste and agricultural residue (straw) fuels.

  

Biofuel demand in the aviation sector is growing. However, the cost is still prohibitive (about 40 per cent higher than oil, according to International Energy Agency). More aviation players are actively working on blending biofuels and kerosene to create greener jet fuel which has shown promising results.

Stricter rules on sulfur emissions from ships will be effective next year for the oil and shipping industries. From January 2020, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will ban ships from using fuels with a sulfur content above 0.5%, compared with 3.5% now. Biofuels produced from Used Cooking Oils are being tested by ocean-going ships in pilot trials worldwide.

  

Based on an article by Hellenics Shipping News in March 2019, CMA CGM has teamed up with the Port of Rotterdam, IKEA Transport & Logistics Services and biofuel company GoodShipping to test biofuels made from UCO and forest product residues. The fuel can be used in a marine engine without modifications and able to reduce CO2 emissions up to 90 percent. This fuel “virtually eliminates” sulfur oxide emissions which enables shipping operators to meet IMO’s deadline.

    Neste is the world's largest producer of renewable diesel refined from waste and residues, introducing renewable solutions also to the aviation and plastics industries. Singapore refinery was launched in 2010, and it produces exclusively renewable products.

      

    The production capacity of the refinery is 1.2 million tons per year. At the moment, Neste is expanding its production capacity in Singapore by up to 1.3 million tons per annum, bringing the total renewable product capacity close to 4.5 million tons annually in 2022.

    Finland’s biofuel producer and oil refiner is expanding its Singapore biorefinery by investing €1.4 billion.
     
    The expansion will increase renewable fuel output by up to 1.3 million tonnes per year (tpy) from the current 1 million tpy – making it Neste’s single biggest investment to date.
     
    The expansion is expected to be completed in 2022.
     
    The plant also has a capacity to produce up to 1 million tpy of renewable jet fuel as well as raw materials for various polymers and chemicals.
     
    Currently, Neste ships more than 50 per cent of its global production to Europe and a major chunk of the rest to North America. However, the refiner is keen to grow its market in Asia. The company is also beginning a company in Shanghai to source waste residues for export to Singapore.
     
    Neste has signed 15 MoUs with leading airlines and airports. This year, it has collaborated with Air BP to deliver sustainable aviation fuel to airline and airport customers in Sweden.

    India targets 20 per cent blending of ethanol in petrol and 5 per cent blending of biodiesel in diesel by 2030 as per the country’s national biofuel policy – released last year. To achieve this target, the country is adding new capacities and aims to set up twelve 2G-Ethanol bio-refineries across 11 states in the country - including Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Assam, Odisha, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
     
    The 12 bio-refineries are expected to be built at an investment of Rs 10,000 crore.
     
    Among these 12 plants, is Indian Oil Corporation’s (IOC) upcoming 2G ethanol production facility at its Panipat refinery in Haryana. To be built at a cost of Rs 700 crore, the proposed plant will need about 473 tonnes of raw materials per day. IOC plans to use non-food biomass raw materials such as rice straw and other ligno-cellulosic feedstock.
     
    Meanwhile, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) has commissioned its 2G ethanol bio-refinery at Baulsingha village in Bargarh district in Odisha. To be built by 2020, this plant will use rice straw to produce ethanol. The plant will use locally sourced rice straw from locations such as Bhatli, Ambabhona, Attabira, Sohela, Burla, Lakhanpur, etc.

    Maersk has joined hands with several multinationals – FrieslandCampina, Heineken, Philips, DSM, Shell and Unilever – for the world’s largest maritime biofuel pilot project.
     
    The large triple-E boxship will sail 25,000 nautical miles, from Rotterdam to Shanghai, using 20% second-generation biofuels. It is a landmark project as the single journey will save CO2 emissions equal to CO2 emitted by over 200 households in a year or 12m km travelled in an average car - which is 300 times around the world!
     
    The multinationals who are sponsoring this pilot are also members of the Dutch Sustainable Growth Coalition (DSGC). in addition, Shell has come forth to supply the biofuels for the pilot voyage.
     
    The biofuel used in this pilot is ISCC certified and is produced from used cooking oil. Maersk aims to reach net zero CO2 target by 2050, and this pilot is an important milestone – laying the foundation for cross-industry partners to work together to take steps towards a more sustainable future.
     
    The Danish carrier is looking at biofuels as both a short and medium term solution for decarbonization.
