& Improving Smallholder’s Productivity”

"Continued Resilience of Natural Rubber
in the face of Challenges"

Unstoppable demand for palm oil products over the next five years with global market estimated to be worth US $88 billion by 2022.

Malaysia and Indonesia together produce more than 80% of the global palm oil supply. In recent years both countries are focusing on Central and West Africa with an estimated 22 million hectares of land is being converted to oil palm plantations.

  • Indonesia interested in Angolan industry (16 Nov 2017, Angola Press ANGOP)
  • Malaysian firms to assist Nigeria revitalise oil palm sector (13 Aug 2017, New Telegraph Newspaper)

Nigeria is revitalizing the nation’s oil palm sector and plans to restore its position as the leader in palm oil production. It is forging closer partnership with Malaysian companies, bringing in their know-hows and technologies to ensure quality production.

With accelerating expansions in West Africa especially in the Congo Basin, palm oil investors are committing themselves towards sustainable productions and responsible investments. With NDPE (‘No Deforestation, No Peat, No Exploitation’) policies rolled out, more companies are excluding unsustainable palm oil from their supply chains and investment portfolios. How effective is the implementation in Africa?

  • Cameroon: Nyong Et Kelle - First Oil Palm Mill Inaugurated (7 Nov 2017, All Africa)
  • SIFCA to joint venture with GVL to build palm oil factory in Liberia (9 Oct 2017, Executive Mansion Liberia)
  • DekelOil pressing ahead with its next Ivorian palm oil project (31 Jan 2018, Webfg.com)

Natural Rubber is gaining fresh interests and investments in West Africa. With projections of increased demand till 2020 the outlook for global natural market is positive.

Industry News

Ghana’s leading natural rubber producer – Ghana Rubber Estate Limited (GREL) plans to invest GH¢33 million to build a new rubber processing plant in Ghana.

The new project will be completed in two phases over 10 years’ time that includes the construction of a new rubber processing plant at Apimanin. GREL has already completed the viability studies and consultation with all the stakeholders for this project and it expects the first phase of the plant to be completed in 2019.

GREL has a concession of 20,279 ha of which 15,041 ha has been developed into rubber plantation in the Western, Central and Eastern regions of Ghana.

Despite low prices of rubber in the world market, the company is hopeful of having a successful rubber processing factory in Ghana.

Leading agri-business group Olam, that has large palm oil plantations in Gabon, has secured Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certification for its Bilala palm oil mill and concessions in Mouila, Gabon. The plantation covers 15,900 hectares (ha) of planted oil palm, and 19,500 ha of protected High Conservation Value areas.

This is Olam Palm Gabon’s second plantation to be RSPO certified. In 2016, its 20,000 ha Awala concession, with 6,800 ha of plantation and mill, became the first-ever new development in Africa to achieve RSPO certification.

With Bilala’s certification, Olam Palm Gabon has a total of 55,400 ha of RSPO certified areas.

The company is also aiming to secure RSPO certifications for its remaining two lots – 27,300 ha of planted palm and the protection of 36,600 ha of High Conservation Value forest and savannah. These are expected to come through by 2021.

Ranveer Chauhan, Managing Director of Oil Palm and Natural Rubber, Olam International, said, “Certified palm oil accounts for about 19% of global volumes, with Europe leading the way, and we expect other regions to start following suit. Achieving the certification was not easy – and nor should it be – we are proud of the environmental standards we have achieved, the jobs we have created (more than 7,700 Gabonese) and the wider social benefits created for the village communities around the plantations.”

Olam is also equally committed to its 100% traceability for its third party supply base and verification by 2020. There has been good progress on this front and at the end of 2017, close to 1,600 indirect mills have been analysed from 14 suppliers, up from about 1,100 mills at the end of July 2017. Olam confirms that by the end of Q2, 2017, 86% of crude palm oil and palm kernel oil volumes were successfully traced using GPS co-ordinates, with 100% of derivatives traced.

At CMT’s 5th Africa Sustainable Oil Palm Summit on 25-26 April, 2018 in Accra, Ghana, listen to a session on ‘Integrating Africa with the Global Industry’ by Mr. Ranveer Singh Chauhan, MD & CEO - Edible Oils & Natural Rubber Business, Olam International Limited.

West Africa contributes about 5% to the world’s palm oil production. Nigeria’s own palm oil production stands at about 907,000 metric tonnes. The country despite having huge land resources suitable for palm oil production is unable to meet its own demand. It imports over 600 metric tonnes of palm oil.

However, Nigeria has huge potential to be a global leader in crude oil palm (CPO) production, as it is capable of producing over 600 million tonnes annually. Such production levels can be realised with the use of best agriculture management practices and employment of suitable agri technologies.

Global demand for palm oil is growing, and buyers are looking at Africa to meet such demand. Nigeria can take advantage of its total hectares of land under cultivation, human capital to become a global CPO producer.

The Regional Manager of Solidaridad, West Africa, Isaac Gyamfi recently said “if Nigeria can intensify production on its existing 2.1m hectare under cultivation, it can produce 6 million metric tonnes of CPO and reduce the land currently under cultivation and release them for other agricultural activities.”

Some of the problems facing Nigeria’s oil palm sector is that 80% of its the oil production in Nigeria comes from the small holder farmers – which needs to be integrated. Another obstacle is technology used in processing of palm oil is inefficient – about 50% of palm oil is lost during processing.

Soilidaridad through SWAPP has helped to prevent such losses. It has deployed equipment called cold pressing that could bring their oil extraction rate from around 9% to 17%.

Instead of bringing more land under palm oil cultivation, Nigeria can also increase the national average yield per hectare, per year from about 4 to 5 tonnes to about 20 tonnes.

More about Africa’s palm oil production will be discussed at 5th Africa Sustainable Oil Palm Summit on 25-26 April, 2018 in Accra, Ghana.
