"Towards New Advances in RPET & Polyester Applications"

Demand for PET and thermoforming applications are fast accelerating and growth is continuing unabated. In the consumer driven middle class culture of the Asia Pacific region, PET packaging’s popularity and future is assured. Whether in new dairy or healthy drinks, or in the supermarket its evolved into thermoform ready-to-eat food packs or the lunch box market. How extensive is this market from North Asia to Southeast Asia?

Despite rising PET package usage, there is huge oversupply of PET resin by the leading Chinese producers with new capacity expansion of 2.8 million tons this year. What will this mean for the industry and how will the global trends in PET pricing play out?

Meanwhile many major brands are adopting sustainable practices ensuring bottles are recycled and seeking materials that are friendly to the environment.

FENC and Adidas collaborated to solve an environmental problem by creating Adidas Ocean Shoes Project. While Suntory looks into bio-degradable PET bottles, and Decathlon uses recycled contents to manufacture their apparels.

Industry News

Textured and processed yarns manufacturing company Unifi has entered the Vietnamese market mainly to expand its global footprint for recycled fiber – REPIEVE. Unifi has partnered with one of Vietnam’s largest polyester yarn manufacturers Century Corporation to manufacture, sell and distribute REPREVE filament yarn in the Southeast Asian country.

Unifi's subsidiary in China - Unifi Textiles (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. (UTSC) will be responsible for managing sales and distribution of REPREVE filament yarn exported from Vietnam.

Vietnam is a major apparel-producing region and the new venture will help Unifi meet the increasing demand from the region and also shorten lead times to its customer base.

Vietnam has become a key focus region for clothes brands and retailers. Vietnam is expected to be a strategic position in growing the global supply chain for REPREVE. It will allow Unifi to expand into other Premium Value Added (PVA) products in the near future. The presence in Vietnam is also expected to help Unifi meet sourcing requests and increase demand from customers wherever they choose to do business.

More about polyester markets will be discussed at CMT’s 7th PET Asia Outlook on 9-10 November in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

China’s largest dairy producer – Yili Group via its Liquid Milk Division – has collaborated with Sidel for packaging a new yogurt drink. The new PET bottle will package Yili’s new Changyi brand.

China has a growing demand for healthy drinks. The new brand from Yili is in tune with such demand that is intended to attract active, health-conscious consumers with growing expendable income.

China’s young population also prefers packaging designs that are convenient and easy to use. Sidel’s PET bottles for the new yogurt drink, therefore, features distinctive elements such as shape of the bottle’s base, as customers were searching for longer shelf-life and improved rigidity to avoid deformation during transportation.

Multiple tests were run to assess the performance of the bottle, before finalizing the best solution.

Sidel finalized the bottle design and new molds were manufactured for the two Yili production lines dedicated to the new yogurt range within three months.

The new range of yogurt drinks has already reached the market shelves and has received favorable reviews from local consumers.

Yili Group is engaged in processing and manufacturing of milk products, including ice cream, powdered milk, sterilized milk and fresh milk, and more.

More about PET bottling markets in Asia will be discussed at 7th PET & Polyester Asia Outlook on 9-10 November, 2017 in Ho Chi Minh City.
