"The Switch to PET as the
New Packaging Option"

Spanish Translation

Headlines on SCAPET markets:

"The Dominican Republic's powerful Grupo Corripio inaugurated a new $20 million Gatorade bottling plant that will supply the beverage to the rest of the Caribbean, including Puerto Rico."

"Empresas Polar, a leading Venezuelan food and beverage manufacturer, has broken new ground with the commercial launch of the first ambient stored yogurt in Venezuela. The non-refrigerated pourable yogurt, called MiGurt, is packaged in an aseptically filled, 750-gram barrier polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle from Amcor Rigid Plastics."

The emerging region of South/Central Americas, Andean and the Caribbean isles has enormous potential to strengthen its PET applications – shifting from glass to PET bottles and packaging. With its estimated population of 500 million people, strong consumerism pattern and growing economies, this region is looking at PET as the material of choice to replace traditional pack formats. As packaging trends move toward light-weight and used for products with extended shelf-life, PET bottles, sheets and jars are becoming the new packaging option. The growing applications of PET have also triggered PET capacity expansion globally, shifting trade dynamics in the region and globally. As the regional market matures to meet sustainable packaging, recycled PET is also taking precedence and finding its niche in the Central America & Caribbean markets.

Venezuelans got their first ambient yogurt from Empresas Polar, a leading Venezuelan food and beverage manufacturer recently. The manufacturer has tied up with Amcor Rigid Plastics to make the non-refrigerated pourable yogurt, called MiGurt, available to customers not only in cities, but also in far flung area.

The yogurt is packaged in a 750-gram barrier polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle with a unique hour-glass design. The PET bottle's advanced barrier technology helps meet aseptic filling requirements (up to 140°F) and provides light-blocking capabilities which not only prevents spoilage and degradation of the yogurt but also keeps its nutritional value intact. All this means an extended shelf life of six months for the yogurt product, which doesn't require refrigeration till the bottle is opened.

Amcor used a unique preform design to achieve optimum material distribution. To customise the PET bottle, Amcor adapted the bottle with special reheat technology. The bottle's design elements give it a smooth interior profile facilitating aseptic sterilisation process.

Thanks to the barrier PET bottles, Empresas Polar can now utilise its extensive nationwide ambient distribution chain and make the ambient yogurt available to consumers even in low-income regions that do not have refrigeration facilities/ distribution channels.

The long shelf life allows low-cost distribution and a highly affordable consumer brand.

Due to the advanced PET bottles, Empresas Polar can now benefit from several logistical advantages such as - inventory control, distribution, and point of sale.

Attend 3rd SCAPET on 07-08 May, 2014 in Santo Domingo for more such interesting PET technology/ market updates from South/Central Americas, Andean & Caribbean region.
