Facts : 3 FLNG projects in the lead

Malaysia's Petronas awards EPCIC deal for 2nd FLNG project

Singapore (Platts) 13 Feb 2014

Meanwhile Petronas FLNG 1 to be moored at the Kanowit field offshore Sarawak is on track to start operations by the end of 2015 and has a design capacity of 1.5 million mt/year . This project is expected to increase Malaysia's total LNG production capacity from 25.7 mpta to 26.9 mpta.

Wison Installs Topsides Liquefaction Equipment on Caribbean FLNG Project

Rigzone Tuesday, December 10, 2013

Said to be the first to come onstream will be Pacific Rubiales' La Creciente field development onshore Colombia, which will produce 0.5 mtpa via a leased vessel from Exmar starting in 2014.

Shell's Prelude field in Browse Basin, Australia will be the largest offshore floating facility ever built and will produce at least 5.3 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of liquids when completed, targeted in 2016.

The FLNG industry is on the sunrise as experts forecast there will be a need for more FLNG production vessels as projects takes shape offshore Malaysia, Australia, Colombia.

According to Douglas-Westwood's research, the market for the construction of FLNG vessels is expected to increase from $3.7B in the period 2007-2013 to $64.4B during 2014-2020."

Technical challenges from evaluating liquefaction processes for FLNG, train capacity equipment count, topside , weight, size and layout limits as important considerations in designing the vessel.

Commercial challenges from contract structures to financing considerations are important for all parties from operators to shipyards and vessel builders.

Why Malaysia?

In addition to having 2 FLNG projects announced , Malaysia is recognised as one of the world's largest LNG exporters.

The country however currently experiences a geographic disparity of natural gas supply and demand. Natural gas demand is primarily from the power and industrial sectors in West Malaysia, while gas supply is in the eastern states of Sarawak and Sabah.

The limited gas supplies and rising demand in the western part of the country has triggered investments in regasification terminals , opportunities in floating terminals also considered.
