Industry News

Biobased plastic bottles have enjoyed a recent surge of interest, thanks to major brand owners announcing new breakthroughs and developments in the packaging.

Coca-Cola’s PLANTBottle made of up to 30% sugarcane-based ethanol has already been launched into markets in 2010, and the company has also tied-up with H.J. Heinz to introduce Heinz ketchup in PLANTBottle packaging this year.

Meanwhile in March, PepsiCo announced the world’s first 100% recyclable plant-based PET bottle which it hopes to bring into full-scale commercialization next year. The bottle is made from bio-based raw materials, including switch grass, pine bark and corn husks and PepsiCo expects to expand its raw material sources to other agricultural by-products such as orange peels, potato peels, oat hulls and more.

Also making waves is PEF produced by Avantium. Made out of biobased EG and FDCA (furan dicarboxylic acid – a replacement for PTA), the company claims PEF to be a suitable biobased PET equivalent. Mr. Peter Mangnus, VP Business Development, Chemicals of Avantium Chemicals BV is confirmed to reveal details on PEF at the 2nd SAPET summit in Sao Paulo, Brazil on 10-11 May 2011.

Research has proven PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles are more environmentally friendly than aluminum cans and glass containers. According to past studies, PET bottles have shown to produce lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, generate less waste, and use less energy for their entire life cycle.

In one particular study, GHG emissions for PET bottles were calculated to be at 1,125 lbs of carbon dioxide equivalents, compared to 2,766 lbs for aluminum and 4,949 lbs for glass. At 59% less than aluminum and 77% less than glass, the lower greenhouse gas emissions for the PET bottles were most notable.

PETRA (PET Resin Association) Executive Director, Ralph Vasami, quoted on the results: “Since 2005, PET containers have been the subject of several independent life-cycle analyses and PET has consistently shown itself to be a sound environmental choice whether compared to glass, metal or other plastics.”

CMT’s 2nd SAPET (South American PET) summit has been specially designed to further explore PET’s potential & prospects in the coming years. Set to reconvene in Sao Paulo on 10-11 May 2011, the summit gathers the biggest brand owners and leading converters in South America over 1.5 days of presentations & networking.
