Middle East accounts for around five percent of the world’s coatings market by value, according to industry consensus. Its paint consumption is one of the fastest growing worldwide.

In some of the Middle East countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, imports of coatings have more than doubled over the last 5 years. The strongest rise in demand is still the oil-rich Gulf area which is benefiting greatly from its booming construction sector as well as flourishing refining, petrochemicals, steel and aluminium industries.

Saudi, with the biggest population in the region has 800,000 metric ton of annual paint consumption. This is forecasted to double by 2010, surpassing some of Europe’s bigger markets. Another high growth market UAE, has charted double digit growth for the past few years due to its construction frenzy and is expected to continue expanding.

The large protective coatings market being created by the Gulf’s oil and gas industry have attracted investments of major coatings manufacturers from Europe, North America and Japan because it requires global technical standards. In fact new R&D has to go into producing tougher products to withstand high temperatures, UV rays and potential abrasion from sand and dust.

In the architectural sector, the safety and environmental standards in Europe and North America are adopted in the Middle East. The paint industry in this region is also driven to produce superior products to meet the specification of international architects with high expectations. Middle East’s ambition for all things tall and huge have accelerated the growth of intumescent fire-resistant coatings. According to leading suppliers, the UAE market for intumescent coatings alone has grown by 200% in recent years.
