Japan’s Suntory Invests €9 million in Anellotech to develop 100% recyclable bottles

Posted on : 21 May, 2018

With the increasing realisation of the damaging effect of plastic on the environment, more and more brand owners are forced to look at sustainable packaging solutions. Japan’s major drinks manufacturer - Suntory Holdings continues to invest in environment friendly packaging solutions. The manufacturer of soft drinks Lucozade and Ribena and spirit Jim Beam, already has a partnership with Anellotech to produce cost-competitive renewable chemicals from non-food biomass. In a further commitment towards sustainable packaging, Suntory has confirmed to put in approximately €9 million in Anellotech to develop 100% recycled bottles.

Suntory’s Mineral Water brand – Suntory Tennensui is already packaged in 30% plant-derived materials. The development of 100% bio-based PET bottle through its partnership with Anellotech is aimed to provide more sustainable solutions.

Anellotech uses Bio-TCat Process to produce cost-competitive renewable aromatic chemicals (benzene, toluene, and xylenes, “BTX”) from non-food biomass. These are used in the production of plastics such as polyester, nylon, polycarbonate, and polystyrene, or for renewable transportation fuels.

Apart from Suntory there are several others focusing on recyclable PET packaging such as Danone’s water brand Evian has formed a partnership with a Canada’s Loop Industries to develop 100% recycled bottles by 2025. Evian has already achieved carbon neutrality in the US and Canada last year, and aims to achieve global neutrality by 2020.

Suntory is presenting a session on ‘Enhancing Our Brand & Introducing New Products in PET and Biobased Packaging’ at CMT’s 3rd North Asia PET Markets, Applications & Recycling on 7-8 June, 2018 in Yokohama, Japan.
