Several Singaporean F&B Companies to Start Using Sustainably Sourced Palm Oil

Posted on : 10 Apr, 2018

Sustainably sourced palm oil from Indonesia and Malaysia has been promoted and encouraged for some time now as palm oil has often come under criticism for causing air pollution in Southeast Asia, draining carbon-rich peatland, deforestation due to slash-and-burn tactics.

With demand for palm oil projected to grow by another 50 percent by 2020, sustainable production is the way forward.

Responding to such pressing needs, 19 food and beverages companies from Singapore have come forward to show their commitment in using sustainably sourced palm oil in their products. Some of these companies are big names such as Crystal Jade, F&N and Tung Lok, as well as small businesses such as Veganburg and NomVNom. These 19 companies account for more than 200 F&B outlets in Singapore.

Ten out of the 19 companies have said they will start using sustainable palm oil this year itself and have already become a member of the South-east Asia Alliance for Sustainable Palm Oil (Saspo), an initiative led by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Singapore that addresses the need for sustainable palm oil. Saspo now has 15 members.

Dr Ng Wai Lek, director of NomVNom, said the price difference between sustainable and unsustainable palm oil is about $3 per tin. Members of Saspo said that sustainable palm oil adds less than 10 per cent to total operating costs.
