Petainer, Mitsubishi Chemical, KHS Japan to Introduce new PET kegs in Japanese Beer Market

Posted on : 16 Mar, 2018

The demand for craft beers has grown considerably across the world including Japan. Japan’s leading brands Asahi and Kirin are becoming increasingly influential in the global beer market too.

Breweries worldwide are increasingly preferring single-use PET kegs as they are not only economical and an efficient alternative to traditional steel kegs and glass bottles, but they are also recyclable, cutting down on logistics costs and washing processes. In addition the kegs provide excellent product protection.

To tap such demand, sustainable packaging company, Petainer has collaborated with KHS Japan and Mitsubishi Chemical to introduce one-way PET beer kegs in the Japanese beer market.

The partnership is expected to help develop a new 10L keg that is designed for the Japanese market and supports the legislative trends aimed at reducing packaging weight limits.

The DLC Keg will use Mitsubishi’s DLC barrier technology along with Petainer’s petainerKeg™ technology. The DLC will replace petainerKeg’s™ existing Nylon and Polyshield barrier technology plus it will be clear instead of the traditional amber. The beer kegs will be recyclable too as it won’t have Nylon and the amber colour.

Mitsubishi will assemble the petainerKeg™ range and the DLC Keg after applying DLC technology in Japan. They plan to manufacture the kegs by blowing from preforms.

The sales and distribution of DLC keg and petainerKeg™ range in Japan will be jointly owned by Mitsubishi, KHS and Petainer.

Kirin is one of the major brands that is already using Mitsubishi’s DLC technology.
