In China, the government’s push towards environmentally friendly coatings with low VOC or zero VOC will outpace the whole coatings industry’s development. According to China’s National Coatings Industry Association, by 2020, 57 per cent of China’s total coating output will be eco-friendly. It is reported that the waterborne coatings market is expected to reach $75 billion by 2020; in Asia, demand for waterborne coatings has been increasing as automobile manufacturers Toyota, Honda, and Hyundai have started applying water-based systems in their new product lines. Powder coatings are also expected to make continued headway.
