Seven & i Holdings has started to promote green packaging materials across its stores in Japan. Last year, it introduced recyclable trays in Ito-Yokado – its Japanese general merchandise store. Approximately 500 types of recyclable tray were introduced that marked an increase of 6% year on year by weight. This resulted in a CO2 emissions reduction of about 2,699 tons. The stores also use bioplastic containers to sell cut fruits and boxed lunches.
Moreover, the original ‘Salad Cup Container’ (sold in the chilled cases of Seven-Eleven Japan stores) were also replaced with recycled or biomass PET containers. The complete replacement is expected to be completed by end February, 2016.
It also installed automatic PET bottle recovery machines across Ito-Yokado, York Benimaru, and York-Mart. People can insert the PET bottles into the automatic recovery machines in the stores and they are then automatically cleansed of foreign matter and compressed/ crushed. This enables rPET manufacturers to obtain high-quality PET bottle chips. Moreover, it also helps to reduce transportation costs as the volume of crushed/compressed PET is much lesser.
The company also plans to use the collected recycled PET bottles and use them in packaging for Seven Premium private brand products.
7 & I Holdings will present its CSR initiatives and approach to sustainability at CMT’s 2nd JPET (Japan PET Resin Trade, Applications & Recycling) Summit on 16-17 March, 2016 in Tokyo.
