Average of 18 recycled plastic bottles used for Nike’s women's kit

Posted on : 22 May, 2015

Sportswear and apparel giant Nike has designed the soccer kit made from recycled polyester for the US Women's National Team (USWNT).

This is Nike's first women's-specific integrated soccer collection that is made from recycled polyester.

The kit includes jersey, shorts and socks that are made with recycled polyester. It's said that each kit is made using an average of 18 recycled plastic bottles.

The recycled plastic bottles are first melted down to produce fine yarn which is then used to make the kit.

The kit is not only environment-friendly, Nike claims that the dual-knit cotton and recycled polyester fabric will provide a softer feel too. The kit weighs 16% lighter than the former ones and will maximise speed and comfort.

It also features a breakthrough cooling system with the ability to push sweat away from the body to the exterior of the shirt and shorts where it quickly evaporates. Plus, the laser-cut ventilation side holes and strategic mesh paneling, including a full-mesh jersey back, are expected to increase air circulation and thermoregulation.

Nike says that a replica of the women's uniform will be available in men's sizes too.

Earlier this year, Nike designed the Indian cricket team's jersey and kit which the side sported in the tri-series against Australia and England, followed by the Cricket World Cup.

More such innovations will be discussed at Polyester Innovations 2015 on 9-10 June in Istanbul.
