President Jokowi confident of solving electricity shortage in Sumatra in next 5 years

Posted on : 09 Dec, 2014

Indonesia's Sumatra region has been facing an electricity deficit. But new President "Jokowi" is very optimistic of solving the issue and generating surplus electricity in the island within the next 5 years.

His government is preparing to provide a 35,000 megawatt (MW) electricity supply to Sumatra.

The new supply is expected to solve the island's electricity blackouts. The government plans to achieve the electricity surplus in phases, by optimizing the existing power plants.

The announcement came on the sidelines of Jokowi's visit to a steam-fueled power plant (PLTU) Tarahan in South Lampung and PLTU Sebalang.

Both the plants reportedly lack several megawatts of electricity supply.

State-owned PT Bukit Asam (PTBA) is developing several new PLTUs, one of which was PLTU Banko Tengah with a capacity of 2 x 620 MW and is expected to be completed in 2018.

By end of 2014, PTBA will complete PLTU Banjarsari, which has a capacity of 2 x 110 MW in Lahat, South Sumatra.

More on the electricity power generation in Indonesia will be discussed at Electric Power Indonesia on 14-15 April, 2015 in Jakarta.
