Essar Oil will be delivering an important status update on their CBM project at the 3rd CBM and Unconventional Gas Summit in Shanghai on 10-11 June. This session comes at a vital time, with Essar’s latest plans to lay a 160KM pipeline from their CBM blocks to the West Bengal City of Kolkata. The Business Standard India reported that Essar had applied to the sector regulator PNGRB (Petroleum & Natural Gas Regulatory Board) for permission to lay the pipeline on 13 January.
Essar is expected to start CBM Gas production from its Ranigani block in West Bengal by this quarter, with an initial output of 9,000-10,000 Cubic meters a day. The company believes that they will achieve peak production of 3.5 million standard cubic meters in mid 2013, and peak output will last for 20 years. The pipeline will allow the CBM gas to cater to Kolkatta’s growing gas markets in a bid to step up CBM production.
Besides Raniganj, Shishir Agrawal, Head of Essar’s Exploration Production Division announced that the pipeline may also be used to transport gas from Essar's Rajmahal CBM block in neighboring Jharkhand. Essar was recently declared provisional winner of the Rajmahal block in the recently concluded auction of CBM areas. The Rajmahal block has been estimated to hold 4.7 trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas.

At the 3rd CBM & Unconventional Gas Summit, Far East Energy Corporation (FEEC) will be sharing an important update on the company’s Shouyang CBM block, located in Shanxi Province in China.
CEO Mr. Micheal R McElwarth will be speaking at the Hong Kong conference, meeting on 10-11 June, and is expected to deliver a progress report on the Shouyang block.
According to a recent company press release, Far East Energy Corporation (FEEC) has drilled 32 wells in the Shaoyang block, including 6 horizontal, 7 deviated and directional wells and 19 vertical wells. The company has also announced plans to drill another 14 wells during the first half of 2010 for Exploration purposes. An additional 25 wells will be fracture simulated from late March through late July.

Coal Bed Methane has been in the headlines recently, when Australia’s Arrow Energy announced that they were in talks with Royal Dutch Shell and PetroChina over the acquisition of Arrow’s coal-bed methane (CBM) assets.
The deal is thought to be worth more than US$3bn. Arrow is at the forefront of developing projects to convert CBM into liquefied natural gas (LNG). Shell has had Arrow in its sights for some time and PetroChina's presence in the bid suggests that much of this gas will be destined for the Chinese market.
This news came hot on the heels of BP’s announcement that they were in advanced discussions for a $200 million shale gas joint venture in Texas. The company has also been in talks with Sinopec, the Chinese oil and gas group, over potential collaboration in the exploration and development of shale gas. BP subsequently confirmed in its annual strategy update that unconventional gas, including shale gas and Coal Bed Methane will be a key focus area for the group in the medium term.
ExxonMobil has also been active in unconventional gas and shocked the world when they acquired XTO for a cool $41 billion in December 2009!
Unconventional Gas resources like Coal Bed Methane are growing in importance as major conventional gas discoveries are becoming increasingly rare. It is no wonder that energy majors like Exxon, BP and Shell are building their unconventional portfolios, especially in light of growing demand for natural gas as a source of energy.
Unconventional Gas is likely to become the dominant gas source for Asia over the next decade. With the demand for gas in Asia expected to more than double between 2005 and 2030 according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), CBM and other unconventional gas sources could meet a significant proportion of the growing demand.

China is looking into large-scale coal bed methane extraction to improve coalmine safety, according to the National Development and Reform Commission. The NDRC is looking into higher subsidies to promote Coal bed methane gas extraction, and Coalmine operators will be encouraged to use methane gas as fuel for residents' daily lives and for power generation.
The government is also looking into implementing a policy to subsidize power suppliers who used coal bed methane to produce electricity and sell it to power grids. The State has set the goals of forming the capacity to extract 3.5 billion cu m of coal bed methane and produce 2 billion cu m by 2010.
China was currently has 18 mining districts that were each capable of extracting 100 million cu m of the gas annually by 2010. The government has attached great importance to coal bed methane in recent years. Coal-bed methane (CBM) projects and investments are surging in Asia, with China at the forefront as it strives to find ways of satisfying its prodigious appetite for energy.
According to reports in China Daily on August 24th 2009, China’s Coal Bed Methane sector is booming, thanks to the Chinese government push for CBM industrialization. “The government will revise the existing Mineral Resources Law, which will cover a change of licensing for CBM production and coal mining," said Chen Xianda, Deputy Director of the department of geological perambulation with the Ministry of Land and Resources, who further adds that "The revision will be a piece of good news for CBM producers". In a bid to increase interest level investing in its CBM industry, Reuters quoted Zhu XiYang, a law research associate at the China Coal Information Institute who said China has temporarily waived its resource tax.
Investment is booming in China. Shanghai Securities News reported on 3 November, that China United Coalbed Methane Co plans to invest at least 2 billion yuan ($293 million) to tap into the country's rich coalbed methane resources. The company now operates more than 1,440 CBM drainage wells in 15 provinces with an exploration investment of US$660 million (4.5 billion RMB). Foreign firms like Far East Energy Corporation (FEEC) plan to sell gas supplies in 2010 from its Shouyang CBM block.
India too is getting its act together to expand the CBM industry, given its huge energy demand with nearby consuming markets for gas in and around coal fields. The country is set to pump 7 million cubic meters a day of CBM by 2013, as three more blocks go into commercial production. S.K. Singh, General Manager of Essar Exploration & Production India Ltd said in an interview with Reuters"India is richly endowed with coal and lignite resources in the Gondwana and tertiary basins." And Essar plans to spend $350 million in the next 3-4 years to on 500 CBM wells, with gas sales projected to start in December 2009.
In coal-rich Indonesia, the outlook sparkles with Jakarta pinning its hopes on CBM as one of the means to curb costly oil imports amid dwindling reserves of crude. Indonesia's Ephindo and its partners will begin gas sales from their CBM blocks in 2011 according to recent reports.

The Indian government is confident of awarding companies final rights for exploration and production of coal bed methane in eight blocks by the end of January, said two senior officials in the Union ministry of petroleum and natural gas in a recent interview with Live Mint.
The 8 CBM blocks offered attracted 26 bids.
The announcement will follow the provisional results of the two October auctions, where state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp. Ltd (ONGC) and Deep Ch IV Pvt. Ltd, as part of separate consortiums, were the most successful bidders for oil and CBM blocks, respectively.
While the government had termed the limited number of bids as reasonable, industry executives claim it to be low, attributing it to lack of interest, and uncertainty over government policies on pricing and taxation.
Bidding companies are already formulating production sharing contracts for these projects to begin, and securing investors to deploy capital. Analysts believe delays in announcing the blocks can result in a lack of capital for project development.
